Content note: This article discusses sexual assault. In an interview published by PerthNow on 8 August 2023, actor Jacqui Purvis said portraying Felicity “Flick” Newman’s sexual assault storyline was both an honour and a significant responsibility. She described it as important representation, while recognising that it could be confronting for survivors.
What happens in Flick’s storyline
PerthNow’s Lauren Higham describes a plot in which Flick’s drink is spiked during a night out, after which she is sexually assaulted and blackmailed for money. The interview gives this broad outline rather than a full account of the storyline episode by episode.

Why Purvis felt pressure to portray it carefully
Purvis described the experience as “full on” and “heartbreaking.” She told PerthNow: “It was a real honour to be able to portray that,” while adding, “It was also a massive pressure at the same time, to do it right and to do it justice.”
Her comments frame the role as more than a dramatic plot: Purvis felt responsible for representing an experience that can be difficult to discuss openly.

Representation that can be confronting
Purvis said, “It’s rare to see this kind of thing on TV; it’s quite a taboo subject, it’s not talked about, it’s not shown and reflected,” and spoke about the potential value of viewers seeing their experiences represented. She also acknowledged the risk of that representation being difficult for people who have experienced assault: “For the people that have been through this in real life, it is confronting, but I also think it’s quite refreshing … so they don’t feel alone and so that they can see themselves reflected, and feel seen and heard and understood.”
She recalled that some viewers had approached her and shared their stories, saying she had done the portrayal justice: “I have had some really beautiful interactions, and have had people come up to me, told me their story and said I did it justice.” That is Purvis’s account of those personal conversations, not a measure of how all viewers responded.

Purvis described recovery as a long process and hinted that a question from Tane could have serious consequences for Flick: “It’s a long road of recovery and then there’s what seems like light at the end of the tunnel, but then Tane asks a question that could change their lives forever,” she said. The interview does not establish how Flick’s story ultimately turns out.
Purvis also recalled feeling angry and frustrated after learning what she called alarming statistics about sexual assault while preparing for the role. PerthNow’s interview does not name a statistic, give a figure, or identify a publisher or year, so it does not provide a number that can be reliably repeated.
