His family announced his death on August 15, 2024; the Los Angeles Times later reported that he died on August 7.
What was the cause of Jack Russell’s death?
The Los Angeles Times attributed the cause to K.L. Doty, Russell’s memoir co-writer: Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy. Russell had publicly announced those diagnoses in July 2024, when he said he was retiring from touring. The family’s initial announcement did not state a cause of death. Los Angeles Times
A voice at the center of Great White
Russell joined Great White in 1981, when the band was still known as Dante Fox. He became the voice of the group through its best-known era, singing on songs including “Rock Me,” “The Angel Song” and “Once Bitten, Twice Shy.” The Los Angeles Times reported that “Rock Me” first charted on the Hot 100 in 1987. “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” an Ian Hunter cover, reached No. 5 on the Hot 100 in 1989; the album …Twice Shy sold more than 2 million copies, and the single received a 1990 Grammy nomination for best hard rock performance. From Great White to a later touring act
After roughly 15 years with Great White, Russell spent time away and released a solo album before rejoining the band in 1999. Great White split in 2001. The following year, Russell and guitarist Mark Kendall formed the touring group Jack Russell’s Great White. Russell continued recording later in his career, including the 2024 duo album Medusa with Tracii Guns; Jack Russell’s Great White also released a Led Zeppelin tribute album in 2021. Los Angeles Times

In July 2024, after Russell retired from touring, bandmate Tony Cardenas-Montana said the group’s transition to the name Once Bitten had been planned with Russell’s knowledge and blessing. “Thus, the Once Bitten band name was put into service, and we hit the road with Jack’s blessing,” he said. The Station nightclub fire
On February 20, 2003, Russell’s band was performing at the Station nightclub in Rhode Island when pyrotechnics ignited insulation in the venue. The fire killed 100 people, including guitarist Ty Longley, and injured 230. Russell and other Great White members later agreed to a $1 million settlement with survivors and victims’ families, according to the Los Angeles Times. Remembering Russell
In a statement reproduced by Georgia Public Broadcasting, Russell’s family remembered his humor, appetite for life and impact on rock music, and asked for privacy. Cardenas-Montana also wrote that “Jack Russell’s voice, humor, and zest for life will be sorely missed by us all.” Georgia Public Broadcasting Blabbermouth
