In fact, June was his biological mother. Nicholson said he learned the truth in 1974, after TIME magazine’s reporting uncovered it and the magazine privately told him.
Who were Jack Nicholson’s mother and parents?
According to Biography.com, Nicholson was born in 1937 to June Nicholson, who was 17, unmarried and uncertain about the father’s identity. June’s parents, John and Ethel May Nicholson, raised him as their own child. Nicholson therefore understood June to be his older sister and John and Ethel May to be his parents.

The family relationships are distinct from the question of paternity: the available account identifies June as Nicholson’s biological mother and John and Ethel May as his maternal grandparents, but does not establish who his biological father was. Biography.com’s profile reports that Don Furcillo-Rose claimed to be Nicholson’s father; that claim is not proof of paternity.
How did Jack Nicholson find out his sister was his mother?
Nicholson said TIME’s reporting for a 1974 cover story brought the family information to light. The magazine did not publish the secret in the profile. In an interview with David Sheff, Nicholson recalled that someone connected to the magazine told him privately, after which he asked living relatives about it and learned the truth.

“Time magazine did a cover story on me. Investigating it, they stirred up the information. They didn’t put it in the article; a friend of a friend was an editor there, and he said, ‘We don’t need it.’ But they told me, and I investigated on my own. I asked the people who were still living and learned the truth.”
The published 1974 TIME profile still described Ethel May as Nicholson’s mother and June as his sister. That contemporary account reflects the family roles he had grown up believing, not a public disclosure of his parentage. The Independent’s 1993 interview likewise quotes Nicholson saying he first heard the true story from TIME’s research, though the magazine never wrote about it.

How old was Nicholson when he learned the truth?
The safest description is that he was in his thirties, or that he learned in 1974. Biography.com’s chronology places the discovery when he was 37, while Nicholson answered “Yes, 30 something” when asked if he found out at 30. The sources support the broad timeframe more clearly than an exact age recalled by Nicholson.

Nicholson said he could not know why his family had kept the truth from him, and he did not claim certainty about their motives. Asked whether they were protecting him or avoiding other people’s judgment, he said, “I can’t know about their motivations, but whatever it was, I have no resentment. As I say, only gratitude.” He also said the arrangement had worked well for him and wondered why, growing up in a small town, he had never heard an inkling of it. June died in 1963, before the disclosure; Biography.com reports that Ethel May had also died by the time he learned the truth.
