It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 has eight episodes. Charlie Day said the writers wrote those episodes in eight weeks, which he called insufficient time, with weekend work part of the schedule. But his comments describe the workload—not a confirmed reason FX ordered exactly eight episodes.
Is Season 17 only eight episodes?
Yes. The Season 17 listing on Disney+ runs from “The Gang F***s Up Abbott Elementary” to “The Golden Bachelor Live” and contains eight episodes.
What did Charlie Day say about the schedule?
In comments reported by CinemaBlend from Day’s conversation with Ted Danson on the podcast Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Day said the team wrote all eight episodes in eight weeks. He described that as “not enough time” and said there was “a lot of writing on the weekends.”
Day also estimated that filming a season takes “two-and-a-half months.” That is his description of the show’s production schedule, not a general measure of how long television seasons take to film.

- RAIL NETWORK EXPANSION AND DIVIDENDS: Extend track connections between key cities, strengthen company reach, and trigger profitable payouts through shared ownership. Tactical growth and financial awareness are essential as each expansion can reward rivals as much as yourself.
- INTERACTIVE INVESTMENT STRATEGY: Manage shareholding stakes, evaluate risk, and anticipate opponents’ moves in a tightly focused economic system. Every auction and route placement creates meaningful tension while maintaining streamlined gameplay within a 60 minute session.
- COMPETITIVE EURO STYLE GAMEPLAY: Combine bidding, stock influence, and route development in a design built for 3 to 5 players. Direct interaction and shifting company power ensure dynamic sessions where strategic foresight determines long term success.
- BALANCED DEPTH AND REPLAY VALUE: Experience a medium weight strategy game set in 19th century Ireland where evolving player decisions create varied outcomes. Accessible structure and layered financial choices deliver consistent tension without unnecessary complexity.
Does the writing schedule explain why FX ordered eight episodes?
Not definitively. Day’s remarks establish that Season 17’s writing period was compressed, but they do not identify it as the reason for the eight-episode order. The available statements from FX and Day do not give a confirmed explanation for that specific count. Claims that the order resulted from strikes, budget cuts, cast availability, a creative choice, or a network mandate are not established by these sources.
How does Season 17 compare with Season 18?
FX’s official series page describes Season 18 as returning to 10 episodes. That comparison shows the eight-episode count was not presented there as the show’s permanent format; it does not, by itself, explain the decision for Season 17.
