Yes—James Gunn said his 2025 Superman film is political, describing Superman as “an immigrant that came from other places” and the film as “the story of America.” He also said its central value is basic human kindness. Those are Gunn’s stated intentions, not a settled verdict on the film or proof that audiences interpret it uniformly.
What did James Gunn say about Superman and politics?
In an interview with The Sunday Times reported in July 2025, director and writer James Gunn described Superman as “the story of America.” TheWrap reproduced his explanation: “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.” Asked whether the film was political, Gunn answered, “Yes, it’s about politics.” TheWrap’s report attributes the remarks to the Sunday Times interview; TheWrap was not the original interviewer.
The Independent’s account also attributes the immigrant and America description to that interview. It says Gunn recognized that different political groups might receive the film differently, while stressing human kindness as a central theme.
How does the film connect politics to morality?
Gunn linked the film’s politics to the relationship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane. TheWrap reports that a scene between them functions as a debate about geopolitics, morality, and whether killing can ever be justified. That framing makes the politics more than a label attached to the film: it points to disagreements about what moral action requires, and where the limits of force lie.

Gunn’s emphasis on kindness is part of that account, not a claim that the film avoids political conflict. His description places moral questions and the immigrant symbolism alongside one another. It does not, by itself, settle how persuasive the film’s answers are.
What is the basis for the immigrant interpretation?
Superman’s origin gives Gunn’s analogy a recognizable fictional starting point: the character arrives on Earth from another planet. DC’s official history says Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, in a story where a scientist sends his child away from a dying planet toward Earth. DC also documents later variations and expansions, including Superman #1 in 1939. DC’s history of Superman describes the comic-book background; Gunn’s use of that background to characterize the film remains his interpretation.

Axios notes that Superman’s arrival from a dying planet has long been compared with refugee and immigrant stories, and reports that Gunn endorsed the connection. It also points to an earlier DC statement connecting the character to refugee experience. This is a symbolic comparison, not a literal equivalence between a fictional extraterrestrial and people who migrate or seek refuge.
What did the political framing prompt?
Contemporary coverage recorded criticism of Gunn’s framing as well as disagreement about whether Superman has political meaning. Axios described backlash from some right-leaning commentators. A July 14, 2025 CNN broadcast transcript captures a discussion that included both criticism of the film’s political framing and arguments that Superman has long carried political meaning.

Those reports establish that public debate took place; they do not show what all viewers thought or establish a single audience reaction. A 2025 article in Public Humanities analyzes the film’s “human way” and immigration-related criticism, offering a scholarly reading of how political symbolism meets the character’s history. That analysis is an interpretation of the film, distinct from Gunn’s own account and DC’s documentation of the comics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can be concluded—and what cannot?
- Gunn explicitly called the film political and described Superman as an immigrant figure and the story of America.
- He said basic human kindness is central, while connecting the film’s politics to moral disagreement, including the question of whether killing can be justified.
- The character’s early comic-book origin involves a child sent from a dying planet to Earth; the immigrant comparison is an interpretive analogy, not a literal account of human migration.
- Coverage records criticism and debate, but does not establish a uniform response among viewers.
The most precise answer to “Is Superman about politics?” is therefore yes, according to Gunn’s stated intention. Whether the film’s politics succeed, or whether its moral and immigration themes persuade a particular viewer, is a separate judgment.
