How the relationships fit together
George and Harry are brothers
George and Harry are sons of Peter and Mother Bailey. The film’s homecoming sequence makes their relationship clear when George refers to Harry as his brother. The British Film Institute’s notes identify Harry Bailey as a character in the 1946 US film: BFI programme notes.
George, Mary, and their children
George marries Mary Hatch, who is Mary Hatch Bailey after marriage. They have four children: Jane, Peter, Zuzu, and Tommy. The children’s Peter shares his name with his grandfather; they are two distinct people in the family tree.
#1 Best Overall
Harry and Ruth
Harry’s wife is Ruth Dakin Bailey. In the screenplay’s homecoming sequence, Harry introduces Ruth as his wife, and Uncle Billy refers to her as his nephew’s wife.
Uncle Billy’s place in the family

Keep the film separate from stage adaptations
This family tree is for the 1946 film. Stage versions may change names, combine roles, or alter plot details, so they should not be treated as additional branches of the film’s family. Concord Theatricals describes one adaptation’s character relationships, while Dramatic Publishing’s playwright’s note explains that its stage version drew on the screenplay and an earlier radio script, then strengthened ideas and addressed plot holes. Those adaptations provide context, but the film’s own relationships remain the reference point here.
