Italian alpine skier Matilde Lorenzi, 19, died after a fall during team training on the Grawand G1 piste in Val Senales, Italy. The circumstances that caused her fatal injuries remain unresolved: a judicial expert proceeding was still examining whether death followed the initial fall or a later impact against the piste edge, according to a Bolzano prosecutor’s update dated 30 October 2025.
What happened to Matilde Lorenzi?
The Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) announced on 29 October 2024 that Lorenzi had died after falling during team training on the Grawand G1 piste in Val Senales. FISI said training activities were suspended. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) independently reported the fatal training fall at the same location.
Those announcements establish the event and its location, but they do not settle the later disputed question of what specifically caused her death. FISI’s announcement and FIS’s report both identify her as 19.
Who was Matilde Lorenzi?
Lorenzi was an Italian Army athlete and alpine skier. The Guardia di Finanza’s Fiamme Gialle said she belonged to the Army’s Centro Sportivo Esercito and the national C team. It also reported that she won the Italian absolute and junior super-G titles in the preceding winter season. Fiamme Gialle’s notice was published on 29 October 2024.

What is known about the investigation?
In an update issued on 30 October 2025, the Bolzano Public Prosecutor’s Office said the case had been entered in the register of known suspects in February 2025. The prosecutor said those under investigation were the piste-safety manager for the Alpin Arena Senales ski area and the coach and preparer of the Grawand G1 giant-slalom training piste. Being under investigation is not a finding of guilt.
The cause of death remains a question for court-appointed experts
The prosecutor said the injured parties had submitted a memorandum, two expert reports and video of the incident. One medical-legal report submitted by those parties concluded, on the basis of medical documentation it had reviewed, that death resulted not from the fall along the course but from a subsequent impact against a raised edge of the piste. This is an attributed opinion in a party-submitted report, not a final judicial finding.

The prosecutor reported that a judicial evidentiary proceeding, with experts appointed by the preliminary-investigations judge, was in progress. Its stated purpose was to examine whether death followed the initial fall or the subsequent impact, and whether possible negligence—including failure to remove the raised piste edge or provide safety measures—could have contributed to the event. The prosecutor’s 30 October 2025 statement is the latest official update located for this account; it does not establish whether there have been later developments.
The criminal and sports proceedings are separate
The prosecutor also said it had obtained the FISI Federal Prosecutor’s file, whose proceeding had closed with a finding that FISI-registered persons had not engaged in antisporting conduct. That disciplinary outcome is separate from the criminal investigation and does not resolve the technical questions the judicial experts were asked to examine.

Family memorial request
FISI reported that the family asked for donations to the “Progetto in Memoria di Matildina” instead of flowers. Its announcement did not identify the project’s recipient or provide a current donation channel.
