General Francis Shaw orders a meteorite pillar—part of the supernatural cage restraining the creature—to be destroyed. Major Leroy Hanlon realizes Shaw believes fear can unite the country and prevent another civil war. Leroy warns that the entity could destroy the world, but Shaw proceeds. As the pillar burns, Pennywise wakes and exposes Will Hanlon to the Deadlights.
Why is the army destroying the pillar?
After Hallorann’s visions guide the military to another dig site, the team uncovers one of the 12 meteorite pillars that, in the show’s mythology, help confine Pennywise and restrict its movement. Leroy objects when the military removes it, warning that taking it away could leave the cage open. At the base, he discovers Shaw’s real plan: destroy the pillar.
Shaw sees fear as a force that could bind the country together. He argues that unleashing the creature might be a lesser cost than the deaths caused by road accidents. That is Shaw’s reasoning within the drama, not a credible real-world policy argument. The plan’s mechanism is clear; the episode gives no indication that the army can reliably control what it intends to unleash.
What happens at the Black Spot before the ending?
The episode’s central tragedy adapts the Black Spot interlude from Stephen King’s It. In 1908, Bob Gray performs as Pennywise the Dancing Clown while his daughter Ingrid watches backstage. In the 1962 story, a masked mob hunts Hank Grogan, barricades the Black Spot’s exits and sets the club on fire. The attack is a racist act carried out by human perpetrators. Pennywise’s supernatural presence intensifies the horror, but does not cause the mob to attack.

Rich saves Marge by hiding her in a footlocker and staying outside; he dies from smoke inhalation. Ingrid had arranged for Hank to be exposed to the mob, hoping the violence would draw Pennywise to her because she believed the creature was her father. Pennywise tells her it is not her father and exposes her to the Deadlights, leaving her catatonic.
The massacre appears to satisfy the creature and prepare it for another long sleep. In the secret society’s account, the “Augury” is supposed to make the beast sleep for another 27 years. Sky’s recap reports that 17 children died during the preceding reign of terror and 23 people died in the fire. These are figures within the show’s story, not real-world historical statistics.

What does Pennywise’s return mean for Will?
The creature’s awakening as the pillar burns confirms the pillar’s role as part of its restraint. Pennywise then exploits Will’s grief and fear: it impersonates a call from Marge before appearing in his home and exposing him to the Deadlights. Will is left frozen and unresponsive. Episode 7 ends without resolving his ultimate fate; that carries into the finale.
How does the episode relate to the novel?
Episode 7 expands King’s relatively sparse Black Spot interlude into a major dramatic sequence. Executive producer and episode director Andy Muschietti described the Black Spot as the arc’s “big climatic moment,” while emphasizing that he wanted to preserve the atrocity’s tragic character. The adaptation gives Ingrid a larger role and connects the massacre directly to Pennywise’s cycle and the military’s present-day plan.

- Blu-ray movie
For viewers comparing the series with the novel, the important distinction is that the Black Spot is both a story about a supernatural predator and a depiction of human racial violence. The monster does not absolve the mob of responsibility for the fire.
