Spoilers for “In the Name of the Father,” Season 1, Episode 6 of IT: Welcome to Derry.

Episode 6 is a turning point built around two kinds of inheritance: the damage passed between fathers and children, and the history behind the clown persona known as Pennywise. Its Bob Gray revelation gives Ingrid Kersh’s story a disturbing new dimension, while the Black Spot plot tightens the threat around the town. The episode’s ideas land more forcefully than its pacing, but the ending restores urgency as the season moves toward its final stretch.

What happens in “In the Name of the Father”?

“In the Name of the Father” is the sixth episode of the eight-episode first season. It aired November 30, 2025. The episode listing describes Dick as plagued by dark visions and surprised at the Black Spot, while the children each face their own challenges. In practice, the hour braids together the search for Hank, rising danger around the Black Spot, and a 1935 Juniper Hill flashback that reframes the Pennywise story.

The title points as much to family conflict as to horror lore. Will and Leroy’s argument escalates after Leroy orders his son to stay on base and Will refuses; the confrontation ends with Leroy slapping him. Meanwhile, the flashback links Ingrid Kersh to her father, circus performer Bob Gray, and the clown identity associated with Pennywise. These strands make the episode’s central question less “Where did the monster come from?” than “What does a family connection mean when the monster can use a familiar face?”

Who was Pennywise the Clown?

Spoilers: The episode reveals that Ingrid is Bob Gray’s daughter and connects Bob Gray, a circus performer, to the Pennywise clown identity. That is the key lore reveal, but it should not be mistaken for a complete, definitive account of IT’s origin. The episode and the critical responses leave room for interpretation about the relationship between Bob Gray and the entity that adopts the clown persona.

The reveal is strongest as character material: Ingrid’s fixation on her father gives the clown’s history an intimate, unsettling frame. It also risks explaining too much too plainly. The A.V. Club’s William Hughes called the episode one of the show’s best while criticizing the revelation; Justin Carreiro of InBetweenDrafts treated the development as a major, earned turn. That disagreement gets at the episode’s gamble: the connection can enrich the mythology if it deepens Ingrid, but it can feel reductive if viewers expect a clean origin story for an ancient, shapeshifting evil.

Does the father-child drama give the episode weight?

Yes, especially in the Will and Leroy conflict. Their clash is not just a plot obstacle; it makes parental authority feel volatile at the same time the supernatural threat is destabilizing the children’s world. The slap is a blunt escalation, and it gives the title’s “father” theme a physical, painful expression.

Ingrid’s relationship to Bob Gray offers a darker parallel. Her connection to her father reframes her behavior without resolving every mystery about her or IT. Together, the two family threads make the episode’s lore more emotionally legible, even if the Bob Gray explanation itself divides viewers.

How does the Black Spot plot connect horror and social violence?

The Black Spot storyline brings community and reunion into the same space as danger. Its threat is not only supernatural: racist mob violence looms over the gathering, giving the town’s human cruelty a specific and immediate form. The result is a useful tension for the series, where fear can come from an inhuman predator and from people acting collectively against their neighbors.

The plot’s force depends on that overlap. Rather than treating the mob threat as background atmosphere, the episode places it alongside the search for Hank and the characters’ personal stakes. That gives the Black Spot material moral weight, though it also adds another urgent thread to an episode already carrying several.

Does the cliffhanger earn its urgency?

The ending does its job as a handoff into the next episode: the accumulated dangers feel closer, and the season’s remaining conflict has sharper stakes. Its impact comes less from a single isolated shock than from the collision of the family, Black Spot, and Pennywise threads. The ending is compelling setup, but it does not erase the unevenness of the route the episode takes to get there.

Critics split on that route. Vulture’s Louis Peitzman rated the episode 2/5 and criticized its pacing as a slog. IGN’s Tom Jorgensen gave it 7/10, praising its reset of stakes heading into the climax. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page displayed an 88% Tomatometer based on eight reviews when accessed; that is a dated critic-review snapshot, not a permanent score. The spread reflects a real trade-off: the episode is full of consequential material, but its effectiveness depends on whether the viewer finds the revelations and parallel plots cumulative or overstuffed.

Verdict: a consequential episode with a divisive reveal

“In the Name of the Father” earns its place as a middle-to-late-season pivot. The father-child conflicts give the horror personal stakes, the Black Spot story connects supernatural dread with racist violence, and Ingrid’s link to Bob Gray makes the Pennywise persona more intimate without fully settling the entity’s origin. The episode’s main weakness is pacing: its lore explanation may feel clumsy to some viewers, while others will find it a meaningful payoff. The closing movement is strong enough to make the next installment feel necessary, even if the episode is more memorable for its ideas than for a seamless build.
