Prosper is a scripted Australian drama, not a documentary. It follows the fictional U Star, an evangelical megachurch based in Sydney, and the Quinn family who run it. Richard Roxburgh, who plays founder Cal Quinn, told PerthNow in January 2024 that the world of a megachurch had not been dramatised with this kind of scrutiny before. His phrase “held to the light” means examining that world through fiction, with the pressures of faith, money, power and family under close view.
What Prosper is
Viewers who come to this series expecting a factual account of a real congregation will be looking for the wrong thing. The series is invented from start to finish, and the interview is explicit that U Star is a fictional church. The basic facts, as listed on Stan’s title page, are these:

- Format: scripted drama and a Stan Original.
- Release: 2024.
- Length: one season of eight episodes.
- Setting: the fictional U Star, based in Sydney.
- Classification: M, with listed mature themes, drug use, a sex scene and coarse language.
The story: a church on the verge of going global
The dramatic engine is the Quinn family’s response to Cal Quinn’s announced expansion of U Star into the United States. That single decision drives the rest of the season. Stan’s episode descriptions point to several connected threads:
- Leadership struggles inside the church.
- Scandals that threaten the organisation’s public image.
- A proposed charity tax bill.
- Preparations for a U Star launch in Los Angeles.
The story is less about belief as an abstract question and more about what happens when a small congregation becomes a large institution, and who inside the family is willing to pay the cost.

The cast
Richard Roxburgh plays Cal Quinn, the patriarch and founder of U Star. Stan also lists Rebecca Gibney, Ewen Leslie and Ming-Zhu Hii among the principal cast, with other performers in supporting roles.
What Roxburgh says the series examines
Roxburgh’s comments in the PerthNow interview are his own perspective on the material, and they are best read as his reasons for making the show rather than as findings about churches in general.
Rank #2
A subject left largely unexamined in drama
Roxburgh argues that the megachurch has been underexplored in dramatic storytelling. He says he found the people and pressures inside such an organisation interesting to examine. In his words: “It was material that hadn’t been turned and held to the light.”
From a small congregation to a large institution
He also describes the series as a way to watch a church grow from almost nothing into a major organisation. As he puts it: “You can see that it starts off from a beautiful, tiny little thing, the germ of an idea in a community hall somewhere.”
Rank #3
Pentecostal evangelism and capitalism
Roxburgh says the relationship between Pentecostal evangelism and capitalism is worth discussing. He presents this as a theme the show raises, not as a settled conclusion. Viewers can judge how far the drama pursues it.
Reading the comparisons: Hillsong, Succession and The Righteous Gemstones
The interview’s framing draws on real-world reference points, and those comparisons need careful handling.
Rank #4
- Movie dvd
- “Hillsong meets Succession.” This is a shortcut that the interview itself offers, not a description of the show. Roxburgh uses Succession as shorthand for power and family dynamics, but he says Prosper is tonally different from it.
- Hillsong and other churches. The interview mentions these as the real-world worlds the show touches on. U Star is not Hillsong or any other church, and the drama should not be read as transferring real allegations or facts to its characters.
- The Righteous Gemstones. This is another dramatised megachurch story. It is a comparison point, not an equivalent, and the two shows should not be treated as interchangeable.
Viewing notes before you press play
Stan’s title page labels Prosper “Now Streaming” and lists 4K Ultra HD, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, audio description, closed captions and downloads. Streaming catalogues change and rights vary by country, so confirm the listing on Stan before you watch. The PerthNow interview, published 19 January 2024, reported the series was streaming on Stan at that time.
Because of the M classification, the series is not suitable for younger viewers. Its mature themes, drug use, sex scene and coarse language are part of how it tests its characters.

What the evidence does and does not establish
The published material confirms the series’ format, cast, season length, setting, classification and central storyline, and it records Roxburgh’s stated reasons for making it. It does not establish production-company credits, filming locations, a second season, broader critical reception or availability outside the territory where Stan operates.
The interview also cites tithing as “typically, 10 per cent” of a follower’s income. PerthNow does not attribute that figure to a named study or organisation, so it should be read as the interview’s own description rather than a verified statistic.
Read as a whole, the interview frames Prosper as a fictional attempt to look at how faith, influence and money intersect inside a growing church. Its value for viewers is the questions it raises, not a factual account of any real organisation.
