What is It Ends with Us about?
Spoilers follow.
Lily Bloom moves to Boston with the aim of opening her own flower shop. She meets Ryle Kincaid, an ambitious neurosurgeon, and the two begin an intense relationship. Ryle is initially charismatic and attentive, but his behavior becomes abusive.
Lily’s response to the relationship is shaped by her childhood. Through flashbacks, the film shows the violence she witnessed between her parents and connects that experience to the choices she faces as an adult. The story examines domestic violence, emotional abuse and the way trauma can be carried from one generation to the next.
Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan, later returns to her life. His reappearance forces Lily to look more directly at what is happening with Ryle and at the difference between an abusive relationship and a safe one. The central conflict is not simply whether Lily chooses Ryle or Atlas; it is whether she can recognize the pattern and stop passing it on.

How does the movie end?
Lily leaves Ryle rather than continuing the abusive relationship. After giving birth to their daughter, she establishes boundaries intended to prevent Ryle from controlling her life or repeating the violence within the family. The ending emphasizes Lily’s decision to break the pattern she inherited from her parents.
The title refers to that decision: Lily resolves that the cycle of abuse ends with her rather than continuing into another generation.
Is the movie based on a true story?
It Ends with Us is not a documentary or a direct account of one family. It is a fictional adaptation of Hoover’s 2016 novel. Hoover has said that the book was loosely inspired by her mother’s experience in an abusive marriage, which helps explain the story’s personal treatment of domestic violence and family trauma.
The novel has a follow-up, It Starts with Us, published in 2022. That book is primarily told from Atlas’s perspective. A film adaptation of the sequel has not been officially announced with a confirmed release date or confirmed cast.

Where can you watch It Ends with Us?
U.S. availability has changed over time, so viewers should check the service or store before subscribing or renting. As of August 8, 2026, JustWatch listed the movie as streaming on Hulu, fuboTV and YouTube TV.
The same U.S. listing showed digital rental or purchase options through:
- Amazon Video
- Apple TV Store
- Fandango At Home
Sony’s movie page also lists purchase options associated with Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango, DIRECTV, YouTube and Sony Pictures Core, along with physical-media information where available.
One point requires caution: Netflix Tudum continues to describe the film as available on Netflix in the United States, but the more recent JustWatch U.S. listing checked on August 8, 2026 did not include Netflix among the active options. Availability can differ by country and change without notice.
What was the legal dispute involving Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni?
The movie’s release was followed by a public legal dispute between Lively and Baldoni. The allegations and counterclaims concerned the film’s production and promotional campaign.
- December 2024: Lively sued Baldoni, Wayfarer Studios and other defendants. She alleged sexual harassment and retaliation connected to the production and promotion of the film. Baldoni denied the allegations.
- Counterclaims: Baldoni filed claims including a defamation lawsuit against Lively and Ryan Reynolds.
- April 2, 2026: A federal judge dismissed most of Lively’s claims but allowed certain retaliation and contract-related claims against Wayfarer Studios and It Ends with Us Movie LLC to proceed.
- May 4, 2026: Lively and Baldoni announced a settlement, canceling the scheduled civil trial. The financial and other terms were not disclosed.
The settlement resolved the major civil dispute, but it did not establish that either side’s allegations had been proven in court. The legal filings and public statements should therefore be treated as allegations and responses, not as a judicial finding that one party’s account was established as fact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did the film attract so much attention?
The adaptation combined a high-profile cast with Hoover’s large readership, but its subject matter also made it unusually sensitive. The film presents domestic abuse within the framework of a romance, then asks the audience to reconsider the idea that love or personal history can justify staying in a dangerous relationship.
That tension contributed to debate about the film’s tone and promotional approach. Its commercial performance showed the strength of Hoover’s audience, while the later dispute shifted much of the public conversation away from the adaptation itself and toward the people involved in making it.
