Isizinda sendaba means a story’s setting or background. The document titled Isizinda Sendaba: Ukuhlaziywa Kwesimo explains setting through three dimensions: time, place and social situation. It applies that framework to stories in Kwaba Mnyama kukhanya, including “Akusensuku zatshwala,” attributed in the document to E.B. Maphumulo.
What “isizinda sendaba” means
In this literary-study context, isizinda sendaba is not just the location where a story happens. It encompasses when events occur, where they happen and the social conditions surrounding the characters. The South African Department of Basic Education curriculum recognizes setting as an element of story study, alongside structure and characters. Department of Basic Education
Time
Time identifies when the events take place. It may be a historical period, a season, a particular day or another timeframe that shapes what characters can do.
Place
Place identifies where events happen. A useful analysis can be more specific than naming a broad region: it should note the kind of environment and how that environment relates to the action.
