No—not according to the cited canon material. John Wick: Chapter 4 does not establish Winston as John’s biological father. Winston’s “my son” farewell at John’s grave is better understood as an expression of affection and grief, not proof of parentage.
Why viewers ask whether Winston is John’s father
At the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, Winston visits John’s grave and says “farewell, my son” in Russian, according to Uproxx’s March 24, 2023 account of the scene. The wording sounds familial, so it naturally invites the question. But a tender or father-like farewell does not, by itself, reveal a biological relationship.

What the films and official material establish
Lionsgate’s Chapter 4 production notes describe Winston as the owner of the New York Continental and call John Wick his friend. They frame their relationship through the hotel’s rules, conflict, and cooperation as Winston helps devise a possible way for John to escape the High Table’s control. The notes do not identify Winston as John’s father. Read Lionsgate’s production notes.
The official announcement for The Continental presents the series as an origin story for the hotel and Winston’s past, following a younger Winston in 1975 New York. It does not identify John as his son. Read the announcement.

Biological father or father-like figure?
| Reading | What supports it | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Winston is John’s biological father | No cited source identifies Winston as John’s biological parent. | Not confirmed by the cited canon material. |
| Winston feels like a father to John | The grave-side “my son” farewell, as reported by Uproxx. | A reasonable interpretation of the scene’s emotional tone, not a canon declaration of parentage. |
Uproxx likewise reads the moment as paternal affection and considers biological fatherhood unlikely. That is the outlet’s interpretation of the scene, not an official franchise ruling. The available evidence supports describing Winston as a father-like figure in that moment; it does not support treating a hidden-parentage theory as established canon.

Winston’s importance to John is grounded in their friendship and in the loyalty and disagreements shaped by the underworld’s rules. Actor Ian McShane described Winston’s character in Lionsgate’s production notes: “Winston is always in control, and it’s interesting to see how he reacts when everything he values is taken away from him.” That comment offers context for Winston’s grief, but it is not evidence that he is John’s father.
