The clearest answer is that Goku and Vegeta’s relative strength changes during their fights: in their first battle on Earth, Goku challenges Vegeta with Kaio-ken, then Vegeta’s Great Ape transformation shifts the advantage. Their allies help Goku’s side survive, and Vegeta escapes. That fight supports a contextual comparison—not a universal ranking of every version of the characters.
What does “stronger” mean in this matchup?
The answer depends on the point in the story and the form being compared. Raw strength, performance in one fight, and a character’s drive to win are related questions, but they are not interchangeable. The official Saiyan-arc recap shows how the balance changes within a single encounter, while official interviews about the rivalry discuss motivation rather than giving a numerical ranking across forms.
What happens in Goku and Vegeta’s first fight on Earth?
The official Saiyan-arc recap describes a fight that swings back and forth. Goku arrives with a power level that surprises Vegeta and Nappa. Vegeta initially has the advantage, but Goku counters with Kaio-ken and the two escalate their attacks. Vegeta then uses a Power Ball to create an artificial moon and transforms into a Great Ape, shifting the balance again. Gohan, Krillin, and Yajirobe help turn the situation, and Vegeta ultimately escapes.
So the first Earth fight is not a clean win proving that either fighter is stronger in every circumstance. It is a particular contest in which transformations and intervention matter. The recap also points readers to the original manga tales for the fight; you can follow the official feature’s tale references to find that story in the Dragon Ball manga.

Why does Vegeta treat Goku as a rival?
In an official feature on their relationship, Professor Nobuyuki Ota, whose research concerns competition and rivalry, describes their motivations as different: “Vegeta’s goal is to surpass Goku, while Goku’s goal is to compete with others in order to become stronger.” The distinction helps explain the rivalry, but it does not establish who would win a fight under every set of conditions. Read Ota’s analysis in A One-Sided Rivalry? Goku and Vegeta’s Relationship as Analyzed by a Psychology Expert!.
How does another expert interpret their fighting styles?
Professional martial artist Katsunori Kikuno offers a separate interpretation in an official interview: Vegeta is focused on winning and proving his strength, while “Goku enjoys the act of fighting itself.” That is Kikuno’s reading of the characters’ outlooks, not a measured comparison of their power and not a statement by the series creator. His discussion appears in The Surprisingly Profound Teachings of Kamesennin: The Martial Arts Mentality in Dragon Ball as Analyzed by a Professional Martial Artist.

Can one be called stronger across all Dragon Ball stories?
The official features cited here do not settle a single ranking across every later story point, transformation, film, or continuity. They establish a transformation-dependent example from the Saiyan arc and provide attributed commentary about the characters’ motivations. Without specifying which versions and conditions are being compared, “stronger” has no one-size-fits-all answer. Some official site text is machine-translated, so its English phrasing should be treated as editorial translation rather than a canonical wording of dialogue.
