But it is not about the modern Korean War, and it is not a sequel to Shōgun: the 2024 South Korean film is set during Japan’s 1592 invasion of Joseon Korea, in the conflict known as the Imjin War.
What is Uprising about?
Distributed by Netflix, Uprising is a South Korean historical action film set in 1592. As Japanese forces advance, King Seonjo flees the capital. Cheon-yeong, a servant who has spent his life trying to escape servitude, joins the righteous army. Jong-ryeo, the only son of a prominent military family, later returns to the capital seeking revenge after years of war. A misunderstanding about what happened to his family helps put the two former friends on opposing sides.

Their conflict is personal, but it is also shaped by the unequal society they inhabit. Cheon-yeong seeks freedom from servitude; Jong-ryeo belongs to a privileged military household. The film places friendship, loyalty and betrayal against the pressures of war and class hierarchy.
What war is Uprising about?
The film is set during the Imjin War, which began when Japan invaded Korea in 1592 and continued intermittently until 1598. The political setting is Joseon Korea. Calling Uprising a “Korean War movie” without explanation can mislead viewers into thinking it concerns the modern Korean War; “Korean historical war film” is more precise.

- Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood Of War (Special Edition) - DVD Brand New
The invasion and conflict are real history, but the principal characters are mostly fictional, according to Netflix Tudum. The film should not be treated as a biographical account of documented figures named Cheon-yeong or Jong-ryeo. Tudum also notes that Gyeongbokgung Palace was destroyed amid the upheaval and restored in the 19th century.
The historical backdrop includes more than the film depicts. In an October 11, 2024 report for TIME, Nam-lin Hur, a University of British Columbia professor specializing in premodern Japanese history, Korean-Japanese relations and Joseon Korea, says Ming China sent troops to aid Joseon and played a crucial role in ending the conflict. TIME reports that this element is not shown in the film.

How does the film treat class and social change?
Class is not merely background to the friendship: it helps explain why the two men experience the same war differently. Cheon-yeong’s effort to escape servitude runs against the advantages Jong-ryeo inherits from his family’s status. The war puts those divisions under pressure while giving the characters reasons to question loyalty and authority.
Director Kim Sang-man described Joseon as a society with a rigid class system and said its hierarchy “began to falter after the Imjin War,” making the period an apt setting for exploring class and society, in Netflix Tudum’s October 25, 2024 interview. That is the director’s framing of the film’s setting, not evidence that its fictional leads represent particular historical people.

- Korean War Stories - DVD Brand New
TIME’s 2024 report quotes Hur estimating that yangban, the elite class, made up roughly 5–10% of the population around this period, while nobi, people in servitude, accounted for roughly 30–40%. These are attributed estimates, not precise census figures.
Is Uprising a good follow-up to Shōgun?
It is a reasonable next watch if what you want is another historical drama set in East Asia, with war, political power and personal loyalties under strain. Uprising offers a distinct angle through its focus on a friendship fractured by class and conflict. That makes it a thematic recommendation, not a claim that the films share a story or fictional universe.
Rank #4
Choose it with the right expectations: Uprising is a film, not a continuation of Shōgun, and its story is specifically tied to Joseon Korea during the Imjin War. The available information supports a broad comparison of setting and themes, not a detailed scene-by-scene or filmmaking comparison.
