What is Trap about?
Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, this 2024 Warner Bros. Pictures thriller follows Cooper Abbott, a Philadelphia firefighter played by Josh Hartnett, who takes his teenage daughter Riley to a concert by Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). The arena is also the setting for a police operation to catch a serial killer known as the Butcher. Cooper realizes the venue is surrounded by police and its exits are blocked. That is the spoiler-light setup; the film’s later turns are best left unspoiled.

The cast also includes Ariel Donoghue, Alison Pill and Hayley Mills. Shyamalan’s premise, as reported by The Atlantic, was: “What if The Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?” It captures the film’s collision of a pop spectacle with a contained crime thriller.
Is Trap based on a true story?
No. The film is fictional, though Netflix Tudum says its premise was partly inspired by Operation Flagship, a real 1985 sting conducted by the US Marshals Service and Washington, DC police. Authorities sent more than 3,000 invitations to fugitives with outstanding warrants, presenting them with what they believed was a ticket giveaway tied to an NFL game. Netflix Tudum reports that the operation led to 101 arrests. The real operation supplied an idea for the setup; it was not the story of the film.

Why is Trap considered divisive?
Reactions have been mixed, rather than uniformly positive or negative. On its US listing, Apple TV displays a 57% Tomatometer score and an average of 5.8 based on 249 critic reviews: 142 fresh and 107 rotten. Individual criticism helps explain the split. In an August 2, 2024 review, Time praised the film’s “amiable goofiness” and Hartnett’s shifts between affectionate fatherhood and darker material, while faulting implausibilities and parts of the plot. A viewer drawn to an unusual, high-concept thriller may find that tonal mix appealing; someone looking for a tightly plausible police procedural may be less persuaded.
What is the rating and runtime?
Apple TV lists Trap as PG-13 for some violent content and brief strong language, with a runtime of 1 hour 45 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes lists the same rating and content descriptors.
