In the United States, viewers under 17 may attend an R-rated movie when accompanied by a parent or adult guardian under the Motion Picture Association’s rating definition. But individual theaters can set stricter admission rules, so check the venue before you buy a ticket or travel. NC-17 is different: the MPA says no one 17 or younger is admitted, even with an adult.
What the R rating means for viewers under 17
The Motion Picture Association (MPA) defines R this way: “Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian.” In practical terms, a 16-year-old can attend under the MPA definition if accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.
The rating itself does not prohibit parents from bringing younger children. However, the MPA notes that many theaters have their own policies for admitting people to R-rated films. A theater’s rule may therefore be stricter than the MPA’s rating definition. Check the specific theater’s current policy, especially if you are planning to attend without a parent or guardian or are bringing a younger child. MPA: R rating · MPA: Resources & FAQs
How PG-13 and NC-17 differ
| Rating | MPA guidance | What it means for admission |
|---|---|---|
| PG-13 | Parents are cautioned to decide whether a film is appropriate for children under 13. | The MPA wording is advisory; it does not establish an age-based admission ban. MPA: PG-13 rating |
| R | Viewers under 17 require an accompanying parent or adult guardian. | Theaters may apply stricter admission policies. MPA: R rating |
| NC-17 | “No One 17 and Under Admitted.” | The MPA says children are not admitted even when accompanied by an adult. MPA: Resources & FAQs |
What to check before going
- Confirm the film’s rating. Check whether it is R, NC-17, or another category.
- Look at the rating descriptors. The MPA says descriptors explain why a film received its rating and can help you judge its content.
- Check the theater’s admission policy. The MPA does not set one nationwide theater policy; theater owners help implement and enforce the ratings system. Ask the venue directly if its website does not answer your question. MPA: Resources & FAQs
These rules are for U.S. MPA ratings
The MPA ratings are for American audiences. Other countries have their own film-rating and classification systems, so the U.S. R-rating rule should not be assumed to apply abroad. The MPA rating also does not by itself establish admission rules for non-theatrical platforms; check the applicable service or local rules.
