Is the Ship From Passengers Really Possible?

The Avalon borrows a real idea—rotation for artificial gravity—but its 120-year journey with thousands of passengers is far beyond current human-spaceflight capability.

Only one part of the Avalon has a clear engineering analogue: spinning a habitat to create an artificial-gravity effect. The rest—a ship carrying thousands of people on a 120-year journey between stars—depends on capabilities that do not exist for crewed interstellar travel. NASA says sending people even to the nearest star is well beyond near-term reach.

What does the Avalon in Passengers claim to do?

In the film, the Avalon carries more than 5,000 passengers on a 120-year voyage. A 2017 Space.com account reports that its stated speed is half the speed of light and describes the ship as rotating to provide artificial gravity. These are reported details of a fictional spacecraft, not demonstrated spacecraft specifications.

The same account says production designer Guy Dyas imagined the enormous structure being assembled in space over decades. The sources do not establish the ship’s exact destination distance or give a detailed propulsion system, so its reported speed and travel time should not be treated as independently verified calculations. Its appearance also does not identify how it would be propelled.

Could spinning a spaceship create gravity?

Rotation is a real concept for producing an artificial-gravity effect. In a rotating habitat, the structure’s motion presses occupants toward the outer wall, giving them a persistent sense of weight. NASA discussed rotating habitats in a 2023 technical presentation, alongside health concerns associated with long-term exposure to microgravity and radiation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That discussion concerns a possible approach, not an operational habitat. It does not establish that the Avalon’s dimensions, structure, or performance would work. A plausible gravity strategy solves only one part of a spacecraft design; it does not supply propulsion, protect a population for generations, or make a journey between stars feasible.

Could people hibernate for a 120-year space trip?

Not with any demonstrated human capability. NASA’s overview of interstellar travel says a crewed mission to even the nearest star would require technologies such as suspended animation or a multigenerational life-support system, and places such visits well out of reach in the near term. The decades-long passenger sleep depicted in Passengers is not an available spaceflight technology.

NASA also describes research into torpor for possible Earth-to-Mars missions. That work is not the same as true suspended animation, and it does not show that people can be kept alive and safely revived after a 120-year interstellar voyage. A torpor concept for a nearer mission should not be mistaken for a working sleeper-ship system.

What else would a long voyage have to solve?

NASA identifies five broad hazards in human spaceflight: radiation, isolation and confinement, distance from Earth, gravity fields, and hostile or closed environments. For a ship carrying thousands of people over an extraordinary duration, each is a major design problem:

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Radiation: A crew and habitat would need protection from space radiation over the voyage.
  • Isolation and confinement: People would live far from Earth and within a closed environment for an extended period.
  • Distance from Earth: The farther a mission travels, the less it can rely on nearby support.
  • Gravity fields: A design would need to address the health effects of prolonged exposure to microgravity or provide another gravity strategy.
  • Hostile environments: The ship would need to sustain human life in conditions that are not naturally habitable.

These are NASA’s general human-spaceflight hazard categories, not a finding that every fictional scenario is impossible or a specific assessment of the Avalon. They show why solving artificial gravity alone would not make a century-long journey safe or practical.

Have spacecraft reached interstellar space?

Yes—but only as robotic probes. NASA describes Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 as the only human-made objects to have reached interstellar space. Their journeys demonstrate robotic exploration, not the ability to transport people, much less thousands of sleeping passengers, between stars.

NASA’s interstellar overview presents robotic probes as a way to learn more about the region beyond the Sun’s influence. It quotes NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory engineering fellow Leon Alkalai describing the goal as mapping the interface between the Sun and the interstellar medium. That work is valuable, but it is fundamentally different from a crewed starship.

So, is the Avalon possible?

Not as a buildable ship with present-day human-spaceflight capabilities. Its rotating-habitat idea has a real engineering analogue, but the film’s reported passenger capacity and 120-year interstellar trip rely on technologies—especially crewed interstellar propulsion and human stasis—that NASA describes as far beyond near-term reach. The Avalon is best understood as speculative science fiction built around one recognizable concept, not a spacecraft design validated for construction.
