The Polar Express never confirms that the boy’s train journey was either a literal event or only a dream. The returned bell supports the possibility that it happened, while the story’s creator describes parts of the ride as metaphor. The ending is designed to leave room for both readings.
Why the ending leaves the question open
On the return trip, the boy loses the bell Santa gave him when it slips through a hole in his pocket. On Christmas morning, he finds it among the presents under the tree. His sister can hear it too, but their parents cannot; as an adult, the narrator says he can still hear it. These details make the journey feel real within the story, rather than something the boy simply forgets after waking.

The bell does not settle the question beyond doubt, though. The publisher’s 2004 teacher’s guide also describes it as a symbol of belief in magic and joyful openheartedness. Read that way, the bell can confirm the boy’s renewed capacity for belief without requiring every part of the trip to be taken as literal fact.
What Chris Van Allsburg said about the journey
In an October 15, 2004 interview with Bookreporter and Kidsreads, author and illustrator Chris Van Allsburg said the book “became a story about faith.” He explained that belief can change how people feel about the world and whether extraordinary things seem possible.

Van Allsburg also said, “Some of what you see in the ride you have to take as metaphor.” That supports a symbolic reading of the adventure, but it is not a declaration that the whole train ride is a dream. His comments leave the story’s literal status unresolved.
How the film preserves the book’s open ending
Actor Tom Hanks said in a November 2004 press conference interview that the screenplay begins with the book’s first line and ends with its last. He also described the story as being about belief. Keeping the source’s framing helps explain why the film ends with an emotional affirmation rather than a conventional explanation of exactly what happened.

Neither Hanks’s comments nor Van Allsburg’s establish that the journey was objectively real or that it was only imagined. They point instead to a story where belief matters more than a definitive answer about the train ride.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Two readings of the story
| Reading | What supports it | What it leaves unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| The journey happened | The boy loses the bell on the train, later finds it under the tree, and can still hear it as an adult. His sister can hear it too. | The story does not provide an independent explanation of the train or its passengers. |
| The journey is dreamlike or symbolic | The bell represents belief and openheartedness, and Van Allsburg says parts of the ride work as metaphor. | The returned bell and the adult narrator’s memory keep the story from confirming that the journey was merely a dream. |
So, is The Polar Express a dream? It can be read that way, but the film does not confirm it. The bell makes a literal journey plausible, while the creator’s comments support a metaphorical interpretation. The most faithful answer is that the story deliberately allows both.
