Yes. The new Lynley is a fresh adaptation of Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley novels, not a continuation of the BBC’s earlier The Inspector Lynley Mysteries. Its stars have also imagined crossovers with Blue Lights and Sherlock—but those are playful suggestions, not announced plans. Season two is in production and is listed for an early 2027 premiere.
How the new Lynley differs from the earlier series
BritBox describes Lynley as a new adaptation of Elizabeth George’s Inspector Lynley novels. The earlier television version, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, ran from 2001 to 2007. The new show is therefore not presented as a continuation of that programme; it returns to the same literary characters through a new television adaptation.
The central pairing is DI Tommy Lynley, played by Leo Suter, and DS Barbara Havers, played by Sofia Barclay. The new series’ official framing emphasizes their contrasting backgrounds and approaches: Lynley is an aristocratic outsider, while Havers is a working-class officer with a maverick attitude. Their class differences, experience and instincts shape the partnership. BritBox’s 2024 announcement noted that George’s books had been translated into more than 30 languages.
The available official descriptions establish a different adaptation and cast, but do not support a comprehensive episode-by-episode comparison or a verdict that one version is better. BritBox’s original announcement identified the first season as four parts; Movistar Plus+ described an eight-episode Spanish edition, so episode packaging is not consistent across those listings.

What the actors said about detective crossovers
In a January 5, 2026 TechRadar interview, Suter and Barclay floated other detective shows as fun crossover possibilities. Neither comment announced a planned crossover.
Leo Suter suggested Blue Lights
Suter said he would “hop on the Blue Lights bandwagon,” praising the show and suggesting a road trip to Belfast. He mentioned his friend Frank Blake, who appears in the series. The remark was an actor’s idea, not confirmation that the two programmes will meet.

Sofia Barclay suggested Sherlock
Barclay imagined a Sherlock appearance in which Sherlock interrupts a Lynley crime scene and takes over, leaving Havers annoyed and delivering “angry banter” before disappearing. It was a comic scenario she said she would enjoy, not an announced production plan.
Season two status and release outlook

Suter and Barclay are returning, along with Daniel Mays and Michael Workeye; the announced new cast includes Deirdre Mullins, Sara Stewart and Assad Zaman.
