The 2025 Netflix series is officially an adaptation based on Capcom’s game IP, but the official sources cited here do not establish it as part of the games’ continuity. The 2007 anime is a separate work, and its exact canon status is harder to verify.
What does “canon” mean here?
An adaptation is a work derived from a game or its intellectual property. “Canon” means that a work is treated as part of the same official story continuity. A license, familiar characters, or shared themes do not by themselves prove that two stories happen in the same timeline.
That distinction matters because there are two different animated series to consider: the original anime released in 2007 and Netflix’s adaptation, which premiered in April 2025.
Is the Netflix Devil May Cry anime canon to the games?
The most accurate answer is: it has not been established as mainline-game canon in the official material cited here. Netflix describes the 2025 series as an animated adaptation based on Capcom’s Devil May Cry game IP and credits Adi Shankar and Studio Mir. That establishes its relationship to the franchise, but not its place in the games’ continuity. Netflix Media Center’s series description does not declare it canon or non-canon.

Creator and showrunner Adi Shankar told TV Insider that the series was designed to work for viewers who have not played the games: “You don’t need to have an understanding of the video game to watch and enjoy the show. That was intentionally designed that way.” He also described the series’ Dante as the youngest version audiences had experienced. Those comments explain the show’s accessibility and characterization; neither is a continuity ruling. The interview was published April 2, 2025.
GamesRadar has interpreted the Netflix series as separate from the numbered mainline games, associating it with Shankar’s “Bootleg Multiverse” description. That is secondary reporting, not an official Capcom determination. Taken together, the available evidence points to a separate adaptation rather than a confirmed chapter of the games’ story, but it does not support saying Capcom has formally ruled the series non-canon. GamesRadar’s coverage should be read as interpretation, not a franchise-wide canon statement.

Is the 2007 Devil May Cry anime canon?
The 2007 series is not the Netflix adaptation, and its status should not be inferred from the newer show. Shankar discussed the earlier anime in his TV Insider interview and mentioned thematic overlap, but those remarks do not establish that it occupies the games’ timeline. The official sources cited here do not settle whether the 2007 anime is part of game continuity, so its precise canon status remains unresolved.
How the two anime compare
| Question | 2007 anime | Netflix series |
|---|---|---|
| Release and platform | Released in 2007; platform details are not stated in the cited sources. | Netflix original that began streaming in April 2025, according to Capcom’s 2025 Integrated Report. |
| How its relationship to the games is described | An earlier anime discussed by Shankar; the cited interview does not establish its continuity status. | Netflix calls it an animated adaptation based on Capcom’s game IP. |
| Official continuity ruling in the sources cited here | Not stated. | Not stated; the adaptation description is not a canon ruling. |
| What the evidence supports | Its exact status in the games’ continuity is unresolved. | The evidence points to a separate adaptation, but a formal ruling that it is canon or non-canon is not established. |
What has changed since the Netflix series launched?
The Netflix show’s release history does not answer the canon question, but it helps identify which adaptation you are discussing. Capcom said season two began streaming in May 2026 and announced a third season on June 10, 2026. Netflix’s June 4, 2026 Tudum article described that third season as the final one. Capcom’s announcement and Netflix’s season update are dated, time-sensitive status information.

Capcom reported 21.7 million views for season one in 2025 and 6.4 million views for season two in its first two weeks, and said the show appeared in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for four weeks across the two seasons. These are figures reported by Capcom, not independent audience measurements; viewership says nothing about continuity. In the same June 2026 release, Capcom reported more than 11.2 million Devil May Cry 5 units sold worldwide and more than 38 million cumulative series sales as of March 31, 2026. Those franchise figures likewise do not determine whether either anime is canon.
