There’s no published evidence in the cited D&D material that the Tarrasque was based on Godzilla. A Dragon magazine article instead calls the creature loosely based on the French Tarasque legend. It mentions Godzilla as one way a Dungeon Master could portray the monster in a campaign—not as a source for its design.
What does D&D say inspired the Tarrasque?
A Dragon 418 excerpt says the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual II entry did not explain the Tarrasque’s origin. It adds that later D&D materials often attributed the creature to the Elemental Princes of Evil, then describes the iconic beast as loosely based on the Tarasque, a turtle-shelled dragon from French legend. Read the Dragon 418 excerpt.
That account distinguishes a real-world folkloric basis from an in-world explanation. The Tarasque legend is the source the magazine names for the creature’s loose inspiration; the Elemental Princes are part of some versions of its fictional D&D history.
Why is Godzilla part of the comparison?
The same Dragon passage invites Dungeon Masters to decide how the Tarrasque behaves in their own campaigns. Its suggestion that a DM can have the monster rampage through a city “like Godzilla” and fight other colossal monsters is a gameplay analogy: it describes a possible scene, not the history of the creature’s creation.

So the answer depends on what “based on” means. If you mean documented inspiration, the cited source points to the French Tarasque, not Godzilla. If you mean whether the Tarrasque can fill a Godzilla-like role in a story, the magazine explicitly presents that as an option for a DM.
How large is the Tarrasque?
In a 2021 Wizards of the Coast article about the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Magic card, writer Mark Rosewater described the Tarrasque as 50 feet high and 70 feet long, weighing hundreds of tons. Those are measurements from his description of the Magic card’s creature, not edition-neutral D&D statistics. Rosewater also connected the card’s indestructibility to the Tarrasque’s reputation for being difficult to kill. Read Rosewater’s 2021 design article.

What does the kaiju comparison add to a D&D encounter?
It suggests treating the creature as more than a large opponent to defeat. Third-party D&D designer Jackson Lewis describes kaiju as forces of nature and recommends giving an encounter a secondary objective beyond simply killing the monster. That is his advice for designing kaiju encounters, not evidence about the Tarrasque’s original inspiration. Read the Jackson Lewis interview.
For a DM, the distinction is useful: Godzilla can be a reference for the scale and spectacle of a Tarrasque scene, while the campaign’s lore and the encounter’s goals remain choices at the table.
