Spoilers for the series finale. If “[SPOILER]” means Superman, yes—by the end of Superman & Lois Season 4, Clark Kent is dead for good. His death earlier in the season is reversed, but the finale shows him living a full human life before dying peacefully. If the intended character is Sam Lane, his death is permanent too.
What happens when Superman dies early in Season 4?
Season 4 opens with Superman fighting Luthor’s monster while Clark fights for his life, setting up the season’s central death-and-return story. DC’s official series page describes the opening conflict.
After Superman dies following his fight with Doomsday, General Sam Lane uses a serum containing Superman’s blood before confronting the threat. Sam is killed, and his heart is transplanted into Clark, bringing Superman back. TV Insider’s October 14, 2024 interview explains the sacrifice and transplant.
Why is Clark’s return different?
Sam’s heart is not a reset button. Because Clark now has a human heart, he gradually loses his powers and ages. Showrunner Brent Fletcher explained that this change lets the series give Clark a human life arc rather than restore him indefinitely to his former state. TheWrap’s December 2, 2024 interview discusses the decision and the finale.

What does the Season 4 finale show?

Fletcher said the creative team wanted to make its ending definitive and give viewers the satisfaction of having followed the whole journey. He also described the season’s misdirection: viewers could take Superman’s early death as the first one, when the team had planned it as the last. TV Insider’s December 2, 2024 finale interview records that explanation.

| Clark’s death in the finale | Permanent within the series ending, after he lives and grows old with Lois. |
The showrunner characterized the finale choice as unusual for the character: “Superman normally isn’t going to die based on that character, but the way that we had engineered it, he was.” TheWrap, December 2, 2024.
