Is Sue Smey Survivor 47’s Surprise Villain?

Sue Smey’s Survivor 47 story invites a villain reading, but the label remains interpretation. Her account, fellow contestants’ comments and the finale offer different pieces of the picture.

Not clearly. Sue Smey can be read as a polarizing player in Survivor 47, especially through her feud with Kyle Ostwald and other contestants’ criticism of her behavior. But “villain” is an interpretation of the show’s edited story, not an established fact about Sue. Her own account emphasizes loyalty and gameplay, while the available interviews offer differing perspectives rather than a definitive verdict.

Why Sue can look like a villain in the season’s story

The case for the label comes from the conflict surrounding Sue, most notably her feud with Kyle and an aired montage that he later discussed. A produced reality-TV season can shape a contestant into an antagonist through the scenes it selects, the context it provides and the way it places those scenes in the larger story. That can make a villain reading plausible without proving that the portrayal captures everything that happened or what a person is like off the island.

There is no published audience poll in the material available here establishing that viewers broadly consider Sue a villain. The label is best treated as a viewer’s interpretation, not a measurable consensus.

What Sue said about her own game

After the finale, Sue said she felt she had “a lot of gameplay” but was “not even a thought” for the jury. She pointed to her role in wanting particular players voted out, her idol and her challenge performance as parts of her game she believed deserved consideration. Those comments describe her expectations and perspective; they do not establish why each juror voted as they did.

Her account also complicates a simple villain-versus-hero reading. Parade’s season recap characterizes Sue’s approach as consistent and loyalty-oriented, and describes her idol and alliance with Gabe Ortis and Caroline Vidmar alongside her conflict with Kyle and endgame with Rachel. That is the interviewer’s narrative synthesis, not a neutral transcript or an independent measure of Sue’s motives.

When asked about the result, Sue praised the winner: “And honestly, Rachel is a beast, and she deserved it 100%.” The remark does not erase the conflict viewers saw, but it shows Sue’s stated response to the outcome. Read Sue’s December 19, 2024 post-finale interview with Parade.

What Kyle and Tiyana said—and what their accounts establish

Kyle’s reaction to the montage

In a December 2, 2024 exit interview, Kyle said the montage about Sue made him feel “a little violated,” because he did not believe he had spoken about her in confessionals the way the montage suggested. He also said he had not let Sue shutting him down on the beach aggravate him. This is evidence of Kyle’s stated reaction and understanding of his own words; the interview does not include the complete raw footage, so it cannot by itself prove that the edit was deceptive.

Tiyana’s criticism of Sue’s behavior

In an October 31, 2024 exit interview, Tiyana said she did not believe Sue was 45 and described her as frequently crying, sick or otherwise struggling on the island. Tiyana explicitly clarified that she was not counting Sue out because of age: “I was counting her out because of her behavior.” These are Tiyana’s impressions, not verified findings about Sue’s health, motives or private conduct. Her clarification matters: she framed her criticism as behavioral, not as a judgment that an older contestant could not compete.

How the finale changes the question

Sue reached Final Tribal Council and finished third. Rachel LaMont won, beating Sam Phalen by a 7-1 jury vote, according to TVLine’s finale report. CBS lists the finale, “The Last Stand,” as airing December 18, 2024, and describes a final-three showdown for the $1 million prize. The result establishes how the season ended, not whether Sue deserved a different jury verdict or whether “villain” is the right description.

The distinction is useful: gameplay describes choices and their effects; the edit describes the story assembled for viewers; and a contestant’s character is a much broader judgment. Sue’s loyalty-centered account, Kyle’s response to the montage and Tiyana’s criticism speak to different parts of that picture. None alone settles the others.
