Apple announced a theatrical release beginning August 15, 2025, followed by global streaming on Apple TV+ on September 5, 2025. The film is therefore not an upcoming September release. What is the film about?
Washington plays David King, a powerful music mogul whose family is caught up in a kidnapping plot. As described in the Associated Press interview with Spike Lee at Cannes, the kidnapper, played by A$AP Rocky, takes the wrong young man: the son of King’s friend and driver, played by Jeffrey Wright. King must decide whether to pay a reported $17.5 million ransom for a child who is not his own. The dilemma pits personal loyalty and conscience against the financial and emotional stakes of a life in danger.

Is Highest 2 Lowest a remake of High and Low?
Apple calls the film a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s crime thriller High and Low, rather than simply presenting it as a scene-for-scene remake. Lee and writer Alan Fox transpose the story to modern-day New York and recast its central pressure around a music-industry executive. That makes the connection to Kurosawa’s film central, while the setting and contemporary characters give Lee’s version its own context. Apple’s description is on its title page.

Denzel Washington leads the cast as David King, with A$AP Rocky and Jeffrey Wright in pivotal roles. Apple’s official release announcement also names Ilfenesh Hadera, Elijah Wright, Aubrey Joseph, Wendell Pierce, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, LaChanze, Aiyana-Lee, Jensen McRae, and Ice Spice. Spike Lee directed the film, and Alan Fox wrote it, according to Apple’s announcement.
How long is it, and what is its rating?
Apple’s US catalog lists Highest 2 Lowest at 2 hours 13 minutes and gives it an R rating. The Associated Press likewise reports a 133-minute running time and says the Motion Picture Association rated it R for “language throughout and brief drug use.” These details are specific to the US listing and the AP’s 2025 review; check the local catalog for regional guidance. The AP review is one critic’s response, not an aggregate or consensus score: Lindsey Bahr rated it two and a half stars out of four, writing that it takes time to find its groove before coming alive on New York’s streets.
