Smiling Friends is ending after Season 3, but the creators say it was their decision—not a cancellation by Adult Swim. Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack announced the news on February 26, 2026, explaining that they felt burnt out but accomplished after completing the season. They have no current plans to return, though they have not ruled out making more episodes someday.
Is Smiling Friends cancelled?
Not in the usual sense of a network cancelling a show. Hadel and Cusack said they chose to stop after Season 3, and Adult Swim said it respected and supported their decision. The distinction matters: the show had previously been renewed for Seasons 4 and 5, but the creators later decided not to continue with them. TheWrap reported the announcement and earlier renewal; the Los Angeles Times covered the creators’ decision and Adult Swim’s response.

Why are the creators ending it?
Hadel and Cusack said they reached the end of Season 3 feeling both worn down by years of work and satisfied with what they had made. Cusack described them as “pretty burnt out” but “pretty accomplished.” Hadel said they wanted to do their best work and leave viewers wanting more rather than continue with episodes they considered half-hearted. In an October 2025 interview, before the third season aired, Cusack had also said they wanted to end on a high rather than outstay the show’s welcome. Read the October 2025 ComicBook.com interview.
How the Season 4 and 5 renewal fits in
The renewal and the ending announcement refer to different points in the show’s timeline. In October 2025, the creators were discussing the existing renewal through Seasons 4 and 5, while saying they would decide later whether to continue. They ultimately chose not to proceed after finishing Season 3. A renewal therefore does not mean the network cancelled the show, nor does it mean those later seasons are still planned.

Could Smiling Friends return?
Possibly, but there is no revival or additional season currently planned. Hadel and Cusack left open the possibility of making more episodes if they want to in the future, and Adult Swim said it would be open to working with them again. That is a door left open, not a promise that the series will return. The Los Angeles Times’ announcement report covers the creators’ position and the network’s response.

Two additional episodes, described as “stragglers” rather than finales, were scheduled to premiere on April 12, 2026. That date has passed. Their scheduling did not change the creators’ announcement that the series would end after Season 3. ComicBook.com reported the two episodes and their scheduled date.
