Sean Paul is Jamaican and has described a family background that includes Jamaican African, white, Portuguese, Chinese-Jamaican and English roots. Those details establish a mixed family history, but they do not establish one definitive racial label that he uses for himself.
Sean Paul identifies himself as Jamaican
In a profile by The Washington Post, Sean Paul described his connection to the country where he was born and raised: “I have a lot of things in me, but I’m from Jamaica — born there, grew up there, represented Jamaica in swimming.” His nationality and upbringing are clear in his own account: he is Jamaican.

How he has described his family background
His paternal family
In a 2022 VIBE interview hosted on his official website, Sean Paul described his paternal grandmother as mixed with “Jamaican African, or I say Black people, and also white people.” He also recounted that his father connected the Henriques surname with Portuguese ancestry and told a family story about arriving in Jamaica with Columbus. That is a story he attributed to his father, not independently verified genealogy.
In the same interview, Sean Paul recalled that as children he and his siblings would joke, “We are mongrel. Mix up.” This is a childhood recollection, not an official present-day identity label.

His maternal family
In a separate National Geographic interview, updated in 2023, Sean Paul described his maternal grandmother as coming from Coventry and his maternal grandfather as Chinese-Jamaican. He also discussed food traditions from both sides of his family.

Nationality, ancestry and racial identity are related but distinct. Sean Paul’s own accounts describe Jamaican nationality and a family history with several roots, including Jamaican African and white ancestry. They do not support reducing him to “a white guy,” nor do they establish a single definitive racial label he applies to himself. The interviews provide no ancestry percentages or demographic statistic that would justify a more exact numerical description.
