Pokémon was put at $100 billion in estimated all-time sales in a 2021 Statista chart. A later Guinness World Records estimate is higher: $147 billion gross as of April 2024. Neither figure is a current audited revenue total from The Pokémon Company, and neither measures the market value of the company or the Pokémon brand.
What does the $100 billion Pokémon figure mean?
Statista’s 2021 chart, published around Pokémon’s 25th anniversary, placed the franchise at $100 billion in estimated all-time sales. It is a historical third-party estimate, not a figure reported as current by The Pokémon Company. Statista’s 2021 chart describes the comparison as one of the most valuable media franchises, but its dollar figure should be read as estimated cumulative sales—not a valuation of a company or intellectual property.
What is the later estimate?
Guinness World Records lists Pokémon as the best-selling media franchise and states: “The best-selling media franchise is Pokémon (Japan), which had grossed an estimated $147,000,000,000 (£117 bn) as of April 2024.” That is Guinness’s estimate as of the stated date, not a newly audited lifetime total. Guinness World Records’ record entry also says that $102.9 billion of the reported gross was thought to have come from merchandise.
The $100 billion and $147 billion figures are estimates from different sources and dates. They do not form a consistently measured annual series, so the difference should not be treated as a precise accounting update or used to calculate a verified growth rate.

Franchise sales, company revenue and brand value are different measures
“How much money has Pokémon made?” depends on what is being counted. A franchise-wide gross-sales estimate can encompass consumer spending across multiple products and commercial streams. It is not automatically the revenue booked by a single company, nor is it the market value of The Pokémon Company, Nintendo or the Pokémon intellectual property.
The Pokémon Company’s official pages provide product and reach metrics, but not a consolidated audited lifetime revenue total for the whole franchise. Its figures page reports unit shipments, card production and international reach; those measurements cannot be added together or converted into a breakdown of Guinness’s gross estimate.

Where does Pokémon’s commercial reach come from?
The Pokémon ecosystem spans games, trading cards, animation and licensed consumer products. The Pokémon Company International says it manages the property outside Asia and handles brand management, licensing, marketing, the Trading Card Game, animation and home entertainment. Its licensing categories include toys, apparel and accessories, designer collaborations, tech gear and home décor. The Pokémon Company International’s overview describes these activities; it does not attribute a specific share of the lifetime estimate to each category.
Guinness’s merchandise figure is for merchandise overall, not toys alone. It should not be read as a sales total for any particular product, retailer or current listing.

What official figures show as of March 2026
The Pokémon Company reports the following operating-scale figures as of the end of March 2026. They help illustrate the franchise’s reach but are not revenue figures:
| Measure | Official figure | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon-related software | More than 515 million units shipped | Shipments, not sales revenue |
| Trading Card Game cards | Over 85 billion produced | Production, not cards sold or revenue |
| Trading Card Game availability | More than 90 countries and regions | Geographic reach |
| Animated shows | Aired in more than 190 countries and regions | Broadcast reach |
These figures are reported on The Pokémon Company’s figures page. They should be kept separate from third-party lifetime gross-sales estimates because the units and underlying measures are different.

Is Pokémon the highest-grossing franchise of all time?
Guinness World Records identifies Pokémon as the best-selling media franchise, using its estimated $147 billion gross as of April 2024. That supports describing Pokémon as the highest-grossing or best-selling media franchise according to Guinness’s record entry. Comparisons with other franchises still depend on using the same measure, time period, geography and included categories; a brand valuation or a company’s annual revenue is not a like-for-like comparison.
