Lupus nephritis can be life-threatening, but that past episode does not show that Cannon is in imminent danger now. The available reports do not establish his current health or personal risk.
What did Nick Cannon say happened?
In a CNN interview aired March 9, 2012, Cannon said he had been diagnosed with lupus nephritis, an autoimmune condition affecting the kidneys. He recounted that his kidneys had failed, that he was more prone to blood clots, and that he developed two clots in his lungs and an enlarged heart. These are his recollections of a past medical episode, not a current clinical assessment. CNN’s 2012 interview captured his perspective: “So I, you know, I’m a glass-is-half-full type of guy, so I never went to that place, even though I knew it was very serious.”
What is lupus nephritis, and can it be fatal?
Lupus nephritis is kidney disease caused by systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). It can worsen over time and lead to kidney failure, but treatment can control the condition, and some people have no complications. Diagnosis and treatment are managed by clinicians and may involve urine and blood tests, a kidney biopsy, immune-suppressing medicines, and blood-pressure medicines. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says 10–30% of people with lupus nephritis develop kidney failure; its page was last reviewed in January 2017. That is a general estimate of kidney failure, not a mortality rate or an estimate for Cannon.
What do the survival figures tell us—and what don’t they?
Studies report outcomes for defined groups, not a personal forecast for Cannon. Their populations, time periods, and measured outcomes differ, so the figures below should not be treated as interchangeable.

These are observational findings for the populations studied. They do not establish Cannon’s current kidney function, disease activity, treatment, or chance of dying.
What can be said about Cannon’s current risk?
The historical interview establishes what Cannon said about his diagnosis and a serious episode in 2012. It does not provide a current medical update. Without a current assessment from him or his clinicians, it is not possible to determine whether his lupus nephritis is active or to quantify his personal risk today. A past life-threatening episode is not proof of present imminent danger.

Why timely care matters
The CDC says that limited access to healthcare, delayed diagnosis, and not following a treatment plan can worsen the effects of lupus and may increase the risk of death. This is general public-health guidance, not information about Cannon’s care. Anyone concerned about symptoms or kidney health should speak with a healthcare professional rather than infer a diagnosis or prognosis from a celebrity’s story. CDC lupus information.
