The Union is a fictional 2024 Netflix spy action-comedy, not a film that Netflix’s official materials present as a retelling of a documented event. Halle Berry’s comments about the organization called the Union explain the movie’s invented premise; they do not verify a real intelligence agency by that name.
Is The Union based on a true story?
Netflix’s official synopsis and coverage do not identify a historical event, real person, or actual intelligence organization as the basis for the plot. They describe a fictional setup: Mike, a New Jersey construction worker, is recruited by Roxanne, his former high-school sweetheart, for a US intelligence mission. The reviewed official sources establish no historical basis for that story, but their silence is not proof that the filmmakers had no creative influences.

Netflix’s Media Center synopsis calls Mike a “down-to-earth construction worker from Jersey” who is thrust into a world of spies and secret agents. Netflix’s Tudum coverage, published August 16, 2024, likewise presents Roxanne’s recruitment of him as the movie’s premise.
What Halle Berry means by “The Union”
In Netflix’s Tudum coverage, Berry describes the fictional organization as follows: “The Union does the dirty work for the CIA and FBI.” In that context, she is explaining the organization in the film—not confirming the existence of a real-world agency that performs this work.

Berry also describes its members as “really just average people, and that’s what makes them so different.” Netflix’s coverage frames that idea as part of the movie’s conceit: the organization recruits everyday blue-collar workers and trains them for spy work. Neither statement is evidence that a comparable government agency exists.

Netflix Tudum says the project grew from Mark Wahlberg asking producer Stephen Levinson what it would be like to play a super spy. That account concerns the film’s creative development; it does not identify a historical source for the story.
Rank #2
The Union stars Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg, with J.K. Simmons among the cast, and Netflix lists it as a streaming title. Its official title page is for Netflix’s “re-en” catalog; availability can vary by region and change over time.
