Latest check: Netflix’s official service-status page reports no current streaming interruption in its latest available result for 28 September 2026 (UTC). Status can change from minute to minute, and a normal global status does not rule out a regional, device, account, ISP or feature-specific failure.
What Netflix’s status page can—and cannot—confirm
Netflix’s status page is the primary source for confirmed service incidents. It may identify a broad streaming problem and provide updates, but a green page does not prove that every country, internet provider, device, title, download or account is working. Newly emerging or highly localized incidents may appear there later.
Netflix directs users whose problem is not listed to search the exact error code in its Help Center or sign in to check account status.
How to check whether Netflix is down
- Open Netflix’s official status page: visit help.netflix.com/en/is-netflix-down, read the headline and any incident updates, and note when you checked.
- Check user reports: Downdetector’s Netflix page can show an unusual spike in reports near you. These are user reports, not confirmation; a spike can indicate an ISP, routing, login or app problem.
- Test another device: try a phone, computer, smart TV or streaming stick.
- Test another connection: briefly use cellular data or a phone hotspot where your plan permits it.
- Try another title and access method: compare browsing, sign-in and playback in the app and at Netflix’s website.
- Run Netflix’s speed test: open Fast.com, which measures against Netflix’s network.
Use the result as a diagnostic decision tree
| What you observe | Likely category | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Fails on every device and network | Broad, regional or account-level issue | Check Netflix’s status page, reports and support. |
| Fails only on one TV or box | App, firmware, device or local network | Restart, update, sign out and test another device. |
| Works on cellular but not home Wi-Fi | Router, ISP, DNS, VPN or Wi-Fi | Restart network equipment, disable VPN/proxy and contact the ISP if needed. |
| Homepage loads but playback fails | Title, DRM, app, regional or delivery problem | Try another title, browser and device; search the exact error. |
| Sign-in fails while other services work | Password, cookies, verification or account status | Clear Netflix cookies, sign in again and check the account. |
| Buffering occurs mainly at busy times | Congestion, Wi-Fi or ISP capacity | Test Fast.com, try Ethernet and improve Wi-Fi placement. |
| Only one title fails | Title-specific availability or playback issue | Try another title and record the message. |
| VPN or proxy is active | Unexpected region or blocked connection | Disable it and restore default connection settings. |
| Public Wi-Fi is in use | Network policy or congestion | Ask the operator whether streaming is restricted. |
Fast fixes for a Netflix problem
1. Capture the exact error
Write down the complete code and wording before restarting. Netflix’s troubleshooting hub maps different codes to network, compatibility, sign-in, playback and account causes.

2. Check speed and connection quality
Netflix lists these sustained-speed recommendations:
| Quality | Resolution | Recommended speed |
|---|---|---|
| HD | 720p | 3 Mbps or higher |
| Full HD | 1080p | 5 Mbps or higher |
| Ultra HD | 4K | 15 Mbps or higher |
These are recommendations, not guarantees. Latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, DNS behavior, routing and device performance can still break playback. On supported TVs, Netflix says to open the app, press Back, choose Get Help, then Check your Network; labels vary by device and app version. See Netflix’s speed guidance.

3. Restart the app and device
Close Netflix, fully power off the device instead of leaving it in standby, wait at least 15 seconds with it disconnected from power when practical, then restart it. Device-specific guidance is listed at Netflix’s help page.
4. Restart the modem and router
- Turn off the streaming device.
- Unplug the modem and router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Plug in the modem and wait about one minute for reconnection.
- Turn on the router if it is separate, then restart the streaming device.
- Retry Netflix.
Some equipment takes longer to reconnect. Netflix’s sequence is documented at this support page.

5. Try a different network
Use cellular data or a hotspot briefly. If Netflix works there, focus on the home ISP, router, Wi-Fi, DNS, VPN or proxy. Do not treat a VPN as a default fix; Netflix may require default connection settings when a VPN, proxy or custom DNS interferes. See Netflix’s connection guidance.
6. Sign out and back in
On many TVs, open Netflix, press Back, open the profile or Get Help menu, choose Sign out, confirm and sign in again. If the option is missing, Netflix documents this remote sequence: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. It is not guaranteed on every device; Apple TV has separate instructions. Sources: Netflix sign-out guidance and UI-113 instructions.

On a device connected to the same network, visit netflix.com/clearcookies, select Sign In and log in again. This signs you out and removes Netflix-related browser data. App-cache controls differ by operating system and manufacturer.
8. Update software and verify support
Install Netflix app updates and device firmware or operating-system updates. Check whether an older TV, Blu-ray player, console or set-top box remains supported; otherwise try a current supported browser or device. Netflix discusses compatibility in its troubleshooting guidance.

- A regional CDN, ISP route or city-level failure can affect some customers without a global incident.
- Netflix may be reachable while sign-in, recommendations, playback or downloads fail separately.
- Hotels, schools, workplaces and cafés may block or throttle streaming.
- Cellular, hotspot and satellite connections may be too slow for stable playback.
- Billing, household, password or verification problems can affect one account only.
- Older hardware may no longer meet current software or playback requirements.
- Downloaded titles can be a temporary fallback only while the app and device remain usable and the downloads have not expired or lost licensing.
When to contact your ISP, device maker or Netflix
Contact your ISP when
- Other internet services also fail.
- Netflix works on cellular but not home Wi-Fi.
- Several home devices are affected.
- Fast.com is far below your expected speed.
- Your provider reports a local outage or routing problem.
Tell the ISP whether one or several devices are affected and whether they use Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Netflix’s ISP guidance is at help.netflix.com/en/node/100242.
Contact Netflix when
- The official page reports an incident.
- The failure persists across multiple devices and networks.
- There is a billing, entitlement, sign-in or account problem.
- The error-code article directs you to support.
- The issue appears widespread despite a normal status page.
Use Netflix’s status page and Help Center details when you contact support. Contact the device manufacturer for firmware or unsupported-hardware problems.
If Netflix confirms an outage
- Read the incident description and latest update.
- Save your error code or screenshot.
- Avoid repeatedly changing device, DNS or account settings while Netflix is working on the incident.
- Retry after a resolution update.
- Use already-downloaded content only if it remains valid and accessible.
Do not cancel or change a subscription solely because of a short service interruption.
