Morgan Freeman has not announced that he is retiring from acting. In interviews in November 2025, he said he had no retirement plan, while acknowledging that the thought sometimes crossed his mind. In a later interview published in August 2026, he said he did not see himself stopping. Those are his comments at those moments, not a promise about what he will do in the future.
What Morgan Freeman said about retirement
Freeman’s remarks distinguish between occasionally thinking about retirement and deciding to leave acting. In a November 2025 interview with AARP, he was asked whether he had a retirement plan. He answered, “No, no,” and described continuing to work and “keep moving.” AARP’s profile at the time described him as 88 and reported that he had appeared in more than 100 films; those figures are AARP’s, not a separate tally here.

In a November 2025 interview with The Guardian, Freeman gave the context for the idea of retirement coming to mind. He said it sometimes floated past him, but an offer would draw his attention back to the practical details of a job, such as the pay and location. He also said his appetite for acting had “dimmed a little,” but “not enough to make a serious difference.”
The later update came in an August 10, 2026 interview with Rolling Stone. Asked about stopping, Freeman said, “And doesn’t look to me that I see stopping ahead of me.” The interviewer referred to him as 88; Freeman corrected that to 89. The comments do not report a retirement decision.

Why the interviews are not contradictory
“No retirement plan” does not mean someone has never considered retirement. Freeman’s AARP answer addressed whether he had a plan; his Guardian remarks acknowledged an occasional thought, while describing how work offers pull him back into considering a role. His later Rolling Stone answer was more direct about whether he saw stopping ahead. Read together, the interviews show no announced retirement and no stated plan to stop, while leaving open the possibility that his feelings could change.
What he said about keeping active
In the AARP interview, Freeman connected staying active with a saying about old age: “Keep moving,” along with Clint Eastwood’s line, “Don’t let the old man in.” AARP’s print excerpt also records his remark that he had been a member since he was 50; that is Freeman’s statement, rather than an independently verified membership record.

His music project is separate from a retirement announcement
The August 2026 Rolling Stone interview also discusses Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience, including the named album. The interview provides context for his creative activity, but does not present the project as a replacement for acting or as evidence of a retirement decision.
