Meredith Grey appears in Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, but Ellen Pompeo has not been confirmed as a full-time series regular again. The showrunner described Pompeo’s role as flexible: she returns for more episodes, while the show accommodates her ability to “come and go.”
What does “back for good” mean in Season 21?
There are two different questions behind the phrase: whether Meredith appears in Season 21, and whether Pompeo has resumed a full-time series-regular role. ABC’s Season 21 preview places Meredith in the story, particularly in conflict with Catherine Fox. The available statements confirm her continued appearances, but do not establish a full-time return.

Why is Meredith at odds with Catherine?
Before Season 21, Meredith left Grey Sloan after publishing her Alzheimer’s research despite Catherine’s objections. Her Season 21 story follows the consequences of that decision and her departure from the Fox Foundation, according to showrunner Meg Marinis. ABC’s preview likewise sets up Meredith and Catherine as adversaries.
What has the showrunner said about Pompeo’s role?
In a September 23, 2024 interview with Shondaland, Marinis said the show was glad Pompeo could “come and go,” adding, “Obviously, it’s great to have her for more episodes.” That describes recurring appearances arranged around Pompeo’s schedule; it is not an announcement that she has returned to the full-time status she held earlier in the series.

#1 Best Overall
ABC Audio described Pompeo’s February 2023 episode as her last as a series regular, while noting that future appearances and voiceovers remained possible. Season 21’s 18-episode arc is the season’s total, not a count of Meredith’s appearances.
