Adam Elliot’s 2024 stop-motion feature Memoir of a Snail earns its heartbreaking reputation through a story of grief, separation and loneliness, softened—but not erased—by eccentric humor. Whether it feels moving or simply too bleak depends on how much emotional hardship you want from a film.
What is Memoir of a Snail about?
Grace Pudel, voiced by Sarah Snook, recounts her life to Sylvia, her pet snail. After their father dies, Grace and her twin brother Gilbert are separated and sent to different foster placements. Their loss and distance shape Grace’s life, as do bullying, isolation and her later friendship with Pinky, voiced by Jacki Weaver.
The snail in the title is not just a whimsical hook. Grace’s narration frames a life story about the emotional defenses people build to survive—and how those defenses can become constricting. The film’s concerns include bereavement, disability, family separation and loneliness.
Is it sad, or too bleak?
It is deliberately bittersweet and often bleak. Misfortunes accumulate, and the film does not quickly offer relief from Grace’s pain. BFI critic Ivie Uzebu notes that this accumulation may feel excessive or heavy-handed to some viewers. The film’s eccentric humor provides contrast, and its final act brings emotional release, but the comedy does not make the difficult material disappear.

Register your animation software code to install the premium desktop version of Stop Motion Studio for HUE, or download the free version of Stop Motion Studio for mobile devices to keep animating on the move.
- MULTI-PURPOSE for animation hobbyists, amateur animators and educators. When not being used to create stop motion movies, the HUE HD Pro camera is perfect for video conferencing, homeschooling, online tutoring, working from home, time-lapse, making instructional videos, animating, gaming and giving live demos. The flexible camera is compatible with native Windows, Chrome OS, macOS and Linux camera apps, and can be used as a document camera in a classroom with interactive TVs and smartboards.
- RECOMMENDED BY TEACHERS for animating the curriculum. Use it for school projects to show the water cycle, animate nursery songs, recreate historical events in engaging ways, and so much more.
That balance is central to the experience: viewers who welcome dark, emotionally intense storytelling may find the humor makes the sadness more affecting. Those who prefer a lighter or less punishing watch may find the repeated hardships overwhelming.
Is it suitable for children?
Stop-motion animation does not automatically mean a film is intended for children. The Associated Press reports that the film received an R rating in the United States for sexual content, nudity and some violent content. It also deals with bereavement, disability, bullying and children being separated from family. Ratings vary by territory, so check the classification where you live before choosing it for a younger viewer.

What makes the stop-motion achievement notable?
The handcrafted form suits a story built from memory, detail and emotional vulnerability. The Associated Press reported that the production involved 7,000 handmade objects, 135,000 photographs and 200 sets. These are AP-reported production figures, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond to the film in the same way.
The film also received major festival recognition: it won Best Film in Official Competition at the 2024 BFI London Film Festival. In its statement, the festival jury said it was “incredibly moved” by the film, calling it a “singular achievement in filmmaking” and praising its emotional resonance and treatment of bullying, loneliness and grief. That is the jury’s assessment, rather than a universal verdict.

Who is likely to appreciate it?
Memoir of a Snail is a strong fit for viewers drawn to character-led animation that can be funny, strange and painful at once. It is less suited to someone looking for an uncomplicated family film or a consistently gentle mood. Its emotional force comes from letting Grace’s losses accumulate before offering a measure of release.
One line spoken by Pinky captures the film’s reflective outlook: “Life can only be understood backwards, but we’ve got to live it forwards.” Jocelyn Noveck’s Associated Press report identifies the line as a slightly edited version of a quotation attributed there to Søren Kierkegaard; it is best understood here as Pinky’s dialogue, not as a verified exact translation.
