A 2025 report that the studio planned to do so was denied by Marvel Studios executive Nate Moore. Marvel has since announced David Jonsson as a different character: T’Challa’s son, who will be the new Black Panther in Black Panther III.
Where the T’Challa recasting claim came from
In January 2025, entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider was cited in a report claiming Marvel was considering a new actor for T’Challa. CNA Lifestyle described speculation accompanying the claim, including an alleged offer and a possible multiverse explanation. Those details were not confirmed by Marvel; the claim itself was a report, not a studio announcement. CNA Lifestyle’s account recounts the rumor and the subsequent response.
What Marvel said about recasting
On February 3, 2025, Nate Moore, then Marvel Studios’ vice president of production and development, rejected the rumor in an interview with ComicBook.com: “The truth is, there’s no truth to those rumors.” He said Marvel had not yet had many creative conversations with director Ryan Coogler about the next film, as Coogler was finishing Sinners. Moore added that the studio would get into the project later that year, but had not started working on it. Read Moore’s interview with ComicBook.com.
Who is the new Black Panther in Black Panther III?
At its Comic-Con presentation on July 25, 2026, Marvel announced David Jonsson as the new Black Panther. The Associated Press identified Jonsson’s character as the son of Boseman’s T’Challa and reported that Black Panther III was announced for release on December 15, 2028. AP’s report on the announcement describes the casting and date.

This is a successor taking up the Black Panther mantle, not an announcement that another actor will play Boseman’s version of T’Challa. The announcement does not establish what name Jonsson’s character will use on screen or reveal the film’s plot.
How this differs from Marvel’s 2020 statement
On December 11, 2020, Marvel said it would not recast T’Challa for Black Panther 2, honoring Boseman’s portrayal while exploring Wakanda and the characters introduced in the first film. CBS News reproduced the statement: “Honoring Chadwick Boseman’s legacy & portrayal of T’Challa, Marvel Studios will not recast the character, but will explore the world of Wakanda and the rich characters introduced in the first film.” CBS News reported the statement. Its scope was the sequel then in development; it was not a blanket announcement about every future story in the franchise.
