Marty Supreme is inspired by real table-tennis champion and hustler Marty Reisman, but it is not a literal account of his life. Timothée Chalamet plays Marty Mauser, a fictionalized character loosely based on Reisman—not Reisman under another name.
Is Marty Supreme based on a true story?
Yes, in the sense that its central character draws on a real person. The Directors Guild of America describes the film as “loosely based” on Reisman and identifies Mauser as fictionalized. That distinction matters: Reisman’s career is historical context for the film, not proof that its individual scenes or plot events happened to him. The DGA’s film description is explicit about the difference.
Who was Marty Reisman?
Marty Reisman was an American table-tennis player whose career began with hustling in Manhattan. Variety reports that he won 22 major ping-pong titles between 1946 and 2002 and earned five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships. Those reported achievements establish why Reisman is a compelling point of reference for a film about a driven player; they do not establish that Mauser’s story reproduces Reisman’s biography. Variety’s account of the film and Reisman supplies those career figures.

How Chalamet prepared to play a table-tennis hustler
The Associated Press reports that Safdie sent Chalamet table-tennis footage from 1948 and that Chalamet developed his playing skills while working on other movie sets. The report does not establish a precise number of years he trained, so an exact duration should not be assumed. The 1948 footage is creative context, not a date for Reisman’s achievements. The AP interview report covers the preparation.
