No. Kevin Costner does not appear as John Dutton in Yellowstone Season 5, Part 2. Costner announced in June 2024 that he would not return for Season 5B or beyond; the show explains John’s absence by confirming that the character has died.
Why Kevin Costner is not in Season 5, Part 2
Costner played John Dutton III, the Yellowstone ranch patriarch. On June 21, 2024, he announced that he would not continue with the series, saying, “I just realized that I’m not going to be able to continue Season 5b or into the future.” CBS News reported his announcement and said he had completed what he was contracted to do. Costner’s decision is the real-world reason he is absent; the series supplies a separate, fictional explanation for John’s fate.

The Part 2 premiere confirms that John is dead. At first, the circumstances appear to point to suicide. A later flashback reveals that he was murdered and that the scene was staged to look like a suicide. ABC News’ November 11, 2024 report describes the revelation: Sarah Atwood arranged the killing after she and Jamie Dutton had discussed a plan. Jamie appears shocked that Sarah carried it out.
That distinction matters: Costner did not return to film Part 2, and John’s death is how the show accounts for his absence in the story. The murder revelation changes the apparent explanation for John’s death, but it does not mean Costner appears in the episodes as the character.

When did Season 5, Part 2 begin?
Season 5, Part 2 premiered on November 10, 2024. The network’s premiere announcement set that date. The first half of Season 5 had debuted in November 2022, according to the Associated Press’ November 2023 report.

A DVD and Blu-ray release was announced for May 27, 2025, in a release notice reproduced by No(R)eruns.net. That announcement establishes the stated disc-release date, not current stock, price, or availability from any particular retailer. Amazon Prime Video’s Season 5 listing also presents a digital purchase option; its catalog can vary by region, so check the listing available where you are.
