Is KAOS Based on Mythology? How the Series Reimagines Greek Gods

Netflix’s KAOS is a contemporary, freely reimagined Greek-mythology series, not a faithful retelling of one ancient text. Meet the gods and myths behind the modern drama.

Yes. Netflix describes KAOS as a contemporary reimagining of Greek mythology. The series brings gods and mythic figures—including Zeus, Hera, Hades, Persephone, Poseidon, Prometheus, Orpheus and Eurydice—into a distorted version of the modern world. It draws on recognizable myths but changes their characters, settings and outcomes, so it is a free retelling rather than a faithful adaptation of one ancient text.

Which Greek myths and figures appear in KAOS?

The central cast includes familiar gods and figures from Greek mythology. Netflix’s character guide identifies Zeus as king of the gods, Hera as queen, Hades as ruler of the Underworld, Persephone as its queen, and Poseidon as Zeus’ younger brother. Prometheus also appears in the mythic story: he is punished for giving fire to humanity.

The series also draws on the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. Netflix presents Riddy as connected to Eurydice and recasts Orpheus as a globally famous pop-star figure. In the familiar myth, Orpheus is a musician who tries to bring Eurydice back from the dead; KAOS uses that recognizable premise in a contemporary drama rather than simply reproducing the ancient story.

How does KAOS change the myths?

Creator and writer Charlie Covell has said the series changes some myths and characters substantially while keeping others closer to their source material. The gods inhabit a contemporary version of Mount Olympus, and mythic relationships and conflicts are reshaped for the show’s own plot. Covell described the setting as “our world, but it’s kind of kinked, and it’s different,” in a Netflix interview.

That makes KAOS best understood as a modern, freely reimagined Greek-mythology series—not a scene-by-scene retelling of a single poem or a comprehensive version of Greek mythology. The show’s official announcement calls it a “contemporary reimagining of Greek mythology” and points to its blend of mythic figures, gender politics, power and the Underworld (Netflix announcement).

What themes does the mythology serve?

The myths give the series a framework for exploring human and political conflicts. Covell has described the Zeus–Prometheus conflict as reflecting tensions between elites and the masses, and between divine power and free will. That is the creator’s stated framing, not the only possible interpretation of the story.

In discussing the show’s mythic material, Covell also pointed to love, power, death, abuse of power, oppression and dysfunctional families as themes that remain relevant in the present. The ancient setting is therefore less a history lesson than a way to stage recognizable struggles in an altered modern world.

Do you need to know Greek mythology before watching?

No. Covell has said they did not want viewers to feel they had to study mythology before watching. The plot introduces its figures and conflicts as it goes; prior familiarity can simply make it easier to spot how a character or story has been adapted. Netflix’s creator interview discusses that approach and the show’s playful use of its mythic material.

What influenced the show’s approach to retelling myths?

Covell has named modern works that reinterpret classical stories, including Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad, Jeanette Winterson’s Weight and Carol Ann Duffy’s The World’s Wife, as well as the Percy Jackson series. These are influences on Covell’s approach to myth retelling; KAOS is not an adaptation of those books. Netflix lists these references in its interview with Covell.
