James Wan is associated with a reported remake of Creature from the Black Lagoon, but a release date, confirmed cast, filming schedule and final directing commitment have not been established. Wan’s more recent public comment was that the classic monster is difficult to make frightening—and takes care to get right.
Is James Wan remaking Creature from the Black Lagoon?
A remake linked to Wan was reported in development, though coverage has described his role with different levels of certainty. In August 2024, Gizmodo reported that Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, would produce and that Wan might direct. Gizmodo attributed to Deadline a description of the proposed film as “a grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic.” That is a reported development concept, not a description of a completed film or a direct quote from Wan or Universal.
Production Weekly’s August 15, 2024 issue listed the project as in development and named Wan as director. A trade-listing entry is not the same as a public studio announcement, and it does not settle whether he is attached to direct now.
What is the reported premise?
Production Weekly described a fossil-hunting expedition in the Amazon that encounters a prehistoric amphibious Gill-Man. This is the premise reported in that 2024 listing, not a confirmed current synopsis. The listing also mentioned Scarlett Johansson in connection with the female lead, but the sources available do not establish a casting announcement; her name should not be treated as confirmed cast.

What did Wan say about the Creature?
In an interview report published April 13, 2026, ComicBook.com quoted Wan discussing classic monsters that are difficult to make scary for modern audiences: “I mean, the creature from the Black Lagoon is not easy. The creature from the Black Lagoon is not an easy one. It takes a lot to get it right.”
The comment speaks to the creative challenge of adapting this monster. It does not establish that the proposed remake is delayed, stalled, cancelled or actively shooting. ComicBook.com described it as in development and did not report a release date.

The original Creature from the Black Lagoon was directed by Jack Arnold and shot in 3D. Ben Chapman portrayed the Creature on land, while Ricou Browning portrayed it underwater. Wan’s reported project is a proposed remake, not a confirmed new edition of the original. Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water is a separate film, not an official adaptation of the Creature story.
