No. Genovia is a fictional European principality in The Princess Diaries, not a real country. The films place it somewhere in an imagined Europe, while the sequel’s palace and other scenes were filmed in Southern California.
What is Genovia in The Princess Diaries?
Genovia is the fictional country ruled by Mia Thermopolis’s family. Disney’s D23 describes the setting of the 2001 film as “a small European principality.” Screenwriter Shonda Rhimes put its status plainly in a Shondaland interview: “Obviously, Genovia is a fictional country.” Read the Shondaland interview with Rhimes.
The films’ European framing is a story setting, not a claim that Genovia has real borders, a government, or a place on a map. The official descriptions do not give it a real-world population, area, or economy.
Where is Genovia supposed to be?
Director Garry Marshall described Genovia as “probably somewhere between Spain and Italy,” according to D23’s entry for The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. This is an informal approximation of an imagined location, not a precise geographical placement. D23’s entry for the sequel.

D23 also characterizes Genovia as an amalgamation of Europe rather than identifying it as a stand-in for one specific country. Taken together, those descriptions suggest a broad storybook European setting, not a real nation that can be located between Spain and Italy. D23’s fan feature on the films.
Where were the Genovia scenes filmed?
The fictional setting and the production locations are different things. D23 says the 2004 sequel was shot in Southern California, with its large palace set built at Disney Golden Oak Ranch. That production detail does not mean Genovia is in California—or that the country exists in Europe.

What inspired the films’ version of Genovia?
The available official descriptions point to a mix of European influences, not a single named country. Rhimes said of the sequel’s invented world, “We had a fictional country, but I did ground it in what I thought were royal traditions.” That helps explain how the story can draw on recognizable royal customs while keeping Genovia imaginary.
