Forrest Gump is not a true story: Forrest is a fictional character, and the film adapts Winston Groom’s 1986 novel. Groom said the book’s idea drew partly on an anecdote his father told him and a 60 Minutes segment about savants. The movie places its fictional protagonist in real historical settings, using archival footage and visual effects to make some encounters appear to happen. The best description is historical fiction inspired by anecdotes—not a biography.
Was Forrest Gump a real person?
No. In a 1994 interview with the Los Angeles Times, Groom was asked whether he knew a Forrest Gump. His answer was: “No, but my daddy sort of did.” He described a person his father had known as part of the story behind the character; he did not claim that the fictional Forrest himself existed.

Groom recalled that his father told him about a boy from his childhood neighborhood who was teased by other children and whose mother taught him piano. Groom said the story stayed with him. He also named a 60 Minutes segment about savants as an influence. These were inspirations for a novel, not evidence that Forrest’s life or adventures happened.
How did the film come from the novel?
The American Film Institute catalog identifies the 1994 film as an adaptation of Groom’s 1986 novel. Groom wrote an early screenplay draft, but Eric Roth was ultimately hired as screenwriter. Robert Zemeckis directed the film, with Tom Hanks playing Forrest.

The book and film are separate creative works. Groom himself acknowledged that films can change characters. The movie’s Forrest is therefore best understood as the result of both Groom’s fictional source and the adaptation choices made by Roth, Zemeckis, Hanks, and the rest of the filmmaking team—not as a filmed account of a real person’s life.
Why does Forrest appear beside real presidents and events?
The film uses real historical settings, but Forrest’s participation in them is fictional. Industrial Light & Magic describes combining archival footage and visual effects to make Forrest appear alongside Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Richard Nixon. ILM also lists effects work involving Vietnam, crowds at the National Mall, and the Olympic ping-pong sequence.
Those scenes blend historical imagery with a fictional character. They help the story move through recognizable periods of American history; they do not document a real Forrest meeting those presidents or taking part in those events.

Hanks has described the screen character’s performance as collaborative. In a 2013 BAFTA interview, he credited director Zemeckis, the cast, and screenwriter Roth as part of that process. He also said the young actor Michael Conner Humphreys influenced Forrest’s cadence and physical mannerisms. That is a performance influence, not an identification of Humphreys as the real Forrest.
