Skincare is a fictional 2024 thriller loosely inspired by the case of aesthetician Dawn DaLuise. It is not a faithful dramatization of DaLuise’s story: the film follows fictional Los Angeles aesthetician Hope Goldman, played by Elizabeth Banks, as she suspects a rival is sabotaging her business and reputation.
What is Skincare about?
Hope Goldman runs a skincare business in Los Angeles. When rival aesthetician Angel Vergara opens a boutique across the street, Hope’s business and reputation come under pressure. She suspects sabotage and turns to Jordan, played by Lewis Pullman, as she tries to work out what is happening.
The film uses that premise to tell a fictional thriller shaped as a Southern California noir. Its central character and plot are not presented as a record of events in Dawn DaLuise’s life.
Who was Dawn DaLuise, and how is she connected to the film?
DaLuise was a skincare expert accused of plotting a murder-for-hire against another aesthetician. Her case was a loose point of inspiration for the film’s co-writers, Sam Freilich and Deering Regan, according to an August 13, 2024 TV Insider interview.

The accusation is the case detail established by the interviews cited here. They do not establish the case’s legal outcome, so it would be inaccurate to infer one from the film or describe the movie as a reenactment.
What did Elizabeth Banks and the filmmakers say?
Banks said she knew the story was “ripped from the headlines,” but clarified that she connected with the script and the fictional character rather than treating Hope as a portrait of DaLuise. She explained the distinction this way: “I do want to clarify I knew it was ripped from the headlines, but sort of in the way Cocaine Bear is ripped from the headlines.”

Banks was drawn to Hope’s experience in an industry and city that prize youth, beauty, and novelty, as well as her growing paranoia and struggle to regain control of her identity and dignity. In an August 16, 2024 Variety interview, director and co-writer Austin Peters put the boundary plainly: “We never set out to tell the true story — that was never our intention.” He described the case as a jumping-off point for a Southern California noir, not a documentary or journalistic account.
How much of Skincare really happened?
The connection is the broad inspiration drawn from DaLuise’s case. Hope Goldman, rival Angel Vergara, and the film’s events belong to the fictional thriller; they should not be treated as confirmed details of the real case. The filmmakers’ own description makes the distinction clear: Skincare borrows a starting point from headlines but does not claim to tell DaLuise’s story faithfully.
