As of the latest information available here, an industry production listing showed no shoot date and said Warner Bros. had not formally approved the film. The studio’s August 2026 slate disclosure did not name it, and no release date has been announced.
Does Tom Cruise’s Warner Bros. deal mean the sequel is happening?
No. Warner Bros. Discovery announced on January 9, 2024, that Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group and Cruise would jointly develop and produce original and franchise theatrical films starring him. The announcement described a broad partnership, not a specific commitment to make Edge of Tomorrow 2. It named the 2014 film as one of Cruise’s earlier Warner Bros. titles but did not announce a sequel, greenlight, filming schedule, or release date. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement also said Cruise and his production company would have offices on the studio’s Burbank lot.
Cruise said he looked forward to making films with the studio, praising its commitment to movies, movie fans, and the theatrical experience. That statement expressed enthusiasm for the partnership; it was not a confirmation of this particular sequel.
What is the sequel’s current status?
The strongest recent project-specific status identified is an industry listing, not a studio announcement. The Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List page, last updated May 26, 2026, labels the film “In Development,” gives its shoot date as TBA, and lists Doug Liman as director, Christopher McQuarrie and Matthew Robinson as writers, and Cruise as producer. The page’s summary says Warner Bros. had not issued a formal greenlight. The Production List entry is useful evidence that the project is being tracked in development, but it should not be treated as confirmation from Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s August 6, 2026 shareholder letter lists planned films for the second half of 2026, 2027, and beyond 2027; Edge of Tomorrow 2 is not among the named titles. The letter’s omission does not mean the film has been cancelled. It means the disclosure provides no release window for it.
Is there a release date or confirmed cast?
No release date or filming start is established in the sources above. The Production List page gives no shoot date, and the studio’s published slate does not provide a window for the sequel. The reviewed reporting also does not establish that Emily Blunt is currently committed to return, so the original cast should not be described as confirmed.

What Doug Liman said about a sequel
In a 2017 interview with Den of Geek, director Doug Liman said he and Cruise had begun discussing a sequel after viewers approached them about the original. Liman described the idea as original and character-driven and said he, Cruise, and Blunt were talking about returning. Those were comments about early conversations at the time, not evidence of current cast commitments or production. The interview also records Liman floating “Live Die Repeat Repeat” as a possible title. It was not an official title announcement.
Liman said: “The fan support and affection for the movie has been so extraordinary that we couldn’t help but react to that, and start talking about a sequel because the fans were talking about it first.” His comments help explain the sequel’s long-running development history, but they do not establish that the film is now in production.

How to tell if the project has materially advanced
Development is not the same as a greenlight, and a greenlight is not the same as a film entering production. The most useful signs of a real change in status would be a formal studio announcement, a dated production start, or a confirmed release window. For now, the publicly stated status remains development without a formal greenlight reported by the industry listing.
If you want to revisit the story that a sequel would continue, the original film adapts Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s novel All You Need Is Kill. That background is separate from the question of whether a second film has been approved.
