Yes—DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is worth playing if you want a long, classic-style turn-based RPG with striking diorama visuals and less combat friction. Its faster battle options and two-vocation system make the adventure more accessible, but Square Enix has streamlined the main story, and the game remains a substantial time commitment. Returning players who prize the earlier version’s fuller shape may be less pleased with that trade-off.
What DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is
Released on February 5, 2026, DRAGON QUEST VII Reimagined is Square Enix’s full remake of DRAGON QUEST VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The story begins with a young fisherman’s son and his childhood friends on Estard. Their discovery of the Shrine of Mysteries leads them into the past, where they uncover lands sealed away from the present. The adventure unfolds through individual vignettes connected by an overarching story. Square Enix’s announcement and North American store listing describe the premise and remake.
The game is available for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and Microsoft Store on Windows. The North American Square Enix Store lists physical standard editions for PS5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. Edition formats and availability can differ by region and platform.
What changed in the remake
A handcrafted diorama look
The remake replaces the earlier presentation with a handcrafted, diorama-like art direction. Producer Takeshi Ichikawa described the aim as depicting the story’s depth and feel more vividly through environments resembling dioramas. That visual approach is a major part of the remake’s identity rather than a small graphics refresh.

A streamlined main story
Square Enix says the main story has been streamlined to make it more approachable. That may help newcomers move through the adventure more readily, but it is also the clearest concession for returning players who value the earlier game’s full scope. The available sources confirm streamlining; they do not establish a reliable list of specific removed islands or quests.
Less friction in combat and vocation progression
The official store listing includes adjustable battle speed, auto-battle, vocation-specific abilities, and tactics that let characters fight without turn-by-turn interruptions. The Moonlighting system lets a character use two vocations at once, drawing on abilities, spells, and perks from both. In his pre-release review, TechRadar’s Hamish Hector additionally noted faster animations, Let Loose effects, and opportunities to defeat some enemies in the overworld before a battle begins. He observed that Moonlighting can reduce the grind to unlock higher-tier vocations. These are review observations, not independently measured performance results.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not
A good fit for newcomers and convenience-minded RPG fans
Hector praised the visuals and combat adjustments, and judged the remake appealing to both RPG newcomers and genre fans. Players who like a traditional turn-based structure but want speed controls and less repetitive battle management have a clear reason to choose this version. Its episodic journey also offers a way into the setting through distinct stories rather than one uninterrupted plotline.
A harder sell for players seeking a short game or the earlier story’s full shape
Hector also cautioned that this remains a long RPG; faster encounters do not turn it into a brief adventure. He noted that its cute aesthetic and familiar story conventions will not appeal to everyone. For returning players, the publisher-confirmed story streamlining is worth weighing against the new presentation and conveniences: whether it feels like welcome pacing or a loss depends on how much they value the older game’s broader form.
