The film behind the headline is Don’t Say a Word, Gary Fleder’s 2001 psychological thriller starring Michael Douglas and Brittany Murphy. It ranked No. 6 among Netflix U.S. movies in a snapshot reported on October 23, 2025, but that old ranking does not establish its current position or availability. Netflix’s title page currently shows a country-specific availability warning, so check your local catalog before planning to watch.
Which film is the headline about?
Don’t Say a Word opened in Los Angeles on September 28, 2001, according to the American Film Institute (AFI). Gary Fleder directed the film, based on Andrew Klavan’s 1991 novel. Michael Douglas plays psychiatrist Nathan Conrad, Brittany Murphy plays Elisabeth Burrows, and Sean Bean is also among the principal cast.
Netflix describes the premise as a psychiatrist making a desperate bargain with criminals to uncover a secret locked in his patient’s mind. AFI’s synopsis adds the personal stakes: Conrad’s daughter has been kidnapped, and the criminals want information tied to the patient. AFI’s film page summarizes the threat this way: “With his daughter’s captors watching his every move, Nathan is constantly reminded: if he wants to see his daughter alive, he dare not say a single word.”
Is Don’t Say a Word on Netflix now?
Availability depends on your country, and the evidence does not establish that the film is currently watchable in every Netflix region. The Netflix title page inspected for this article displays the message, “Oh no! This title currently isn’t available to watch in your country.” That warning does not identify every territory or confirm the film’s current U.S. availability. Search the title in your own Netflix app or visit its local catalog page for the answer where you live.

What does “taking over Netflix” mean?
BGR reported on October 23, 2025, that Don’t Say a Word had recently arrived on Netflix in the United States and was No. 6 in Netflix U.S. movies at that time. That is a dated, U.S.-specific chart snapshot—not a current ranking, proof of continuing availability, or a measure of sustained viewership. The available reporting does not provide a broader Netflix viewing total.
BGR also reported snapshot ratings of 23% from critics across 113 reviews and 49% from audiences, based on more than 50,000 ratings, on October 23, 2025. Those figures can change and should not be treated as current scores. The article reproduced Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus, which called the film “slick and competently made” but “routine” and said it stretches believability.
