No. Nakatomi Plaza is fictional; the real Los Angeles tower featured as its exterior and interior in Die Hard is Fox Plaza, at 2121 Avenue of the Stars in Century City. The tower still stands—the destruction seen in the film was created with a scale model.
Where is the real Nakatomi Plaza?
Fox Plaza is at 2121 Avenue of the Stars, Los Angeles, CA 90064. The Los Angeles Conservancy identifies it as a 34-story office building completed in 1986 and designed by Johnson Fain Architects. Its Late Modern exterior combines pink-tinged granite with gray-tinted glass. Los Angeles Conservancy: Fox Plaza
How did Fox Plaza become Nakatomi Plaza?
Die Hard uses Fox Plaza as more than a distant stand-in. In his Library of Congress National Film Preservation Board essay, Eric Lichtenfeld writes that the building “assumed the role of the Nakatomi building both inside and out.” That supports describing Fox Plaza as the film’s real-world building, but it does not establish that every interior or scene was filmed there. Was the real building destroyed for the movie?
No. The apparent destruction of Nakatomi Plaza was created with a scale model, according to the British Film Institute. Fox Plaza itself was not destroyed for the production. The BFI also describes the tower as just one year old when the crew arrived. British Film Institute: How locations from your favourite Christmas films have changed
