Deadpool & Wolverine can be read as a turning point in how Marvel uses the multiverse, but the film has not been established as its ending. The stronger case is that it connects the Fox-era X-Men films to the MCU while pointing toward a new emphasis on mutant stories—and that it keeps the multiverse from swallowing the characters at its center.
What does Deadpool & Wolverine mean for the MCU?
Released in the UK on 25 July 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine is a Shawn Levy-directed action, adventure and science-fiction superhero film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. It brings together characters associated with the Fox-era X-Men films and Marvel Studios’ MCU. The film’s Disney UK listing also names Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Matthew Macfadyen among the cast.
The connective device is the Time Variance Authority (TVA), previously prominent in Loki. The Associated Press reported that the TVA helps Deadpool reach the MCU. That makes the TVA a bridge in this story; it does not, by itself, establish that all earlier continuities have merged into one canon. AP’s preview of the film also reported that the first trailer drew 365 million views in its first 24 hours, a sign of intense anticipation—not evidence of a change in Marvel’s continuity.
Is it really the end of Marvel’s multiverse?
No official statement cited here says the film begins the end of the multiverse, confirms an MCU reset, or announces that alternate realities will stop mattering. Director Shawn Levy described the movie as a story about two people making their way in the Multiverse. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, meanwhile, said the film would offer “at least hints” of how Marvel planned to build on the mutant saga. The first point confirms the multiverse is part of the movie’s setting; the second points toward future mutant stories. Neither confirms the multiverse is finished. Feige’s Disney interview is the clearest future-facing signal in the available public comments.

So “beginning of the end” works best as an interpretation of emphasis, not a literal plot announcement. The film may signal a move away from treating multiverse crossovers and surprise appearances as the destination in themselves, toward stories built around characters and the X-Men world Marvel can now explore. That is a reading of the film and its creators’ comments, not a declared studio strategy.
Why the film may mark a change in emphasis
Marvel has more room for mutant stories
Feige connected the film’s arrival to Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, after which Marvel had access to X-Men characters it previously lacked. He also linked the movie’s history with the Fox and X-Men films to hints of a mutant saga ahead. That supports the idea of a new storytelling chapter; it does not mean Marvel has announced that every multiverse thread will be closed.

The leads matter more than the cameos
Levy said that, beyond the action, jokes and spectacle, the film is “ultimately a story about two people trying to make their way in the Multiverse.” He described it as an unlikely friendship and an “odd couple, buddy cop movie.” He also said he resisted the temptation to include every cameo or Easter egg, keeping the central story in focus. This supports a narrower, character-led reading of the film rather than the claim that it exists mainly to bring past universes together. Levy’s Disney interview discusses both the story and his approach to its tone.
That character-first approach matters to the pairing’s tone. Levy described the film’s subversive humor, audacity and self-awareness as recognizably Deadpool, with Wolverine changing the dynamic and adding warmth. Feige summarized Marvel’s approach to bringing the character into the company this way: “The secret to integrating Deadpool into the Disney company is to let Deadpool be Deadpool.” Feige’s interview presents that as a principle of integration, not a promise about the franchise’s wider direction.

Do you need to watch Loki first?
No. The TVA connects this film to the MCU, but that does not make Loki required preparation. Levy said he did not want audiences to do homework before watching and intended the film to entertain on its own. The AP preview also reported that the filmmakers were mindful of viewers arriving without extensive continuity knowledge. Watching Loki may make the TVA more familiar, but the available comments do not present it as a prerequisite. AP’s preview covers the TVA connection and the filmmakers’ approach to audience entry.
Does Deadpool & Wolverine undo Logan?
The filmmakers’ reported intention was that this film would not interfere with Logan. Wolverine’s appearance here should not be treated as proof that the earlier film’s ending has been erased or mechanically cancelled by the multiverse. That distinction keeps a character’s return separate from a claim about what happened in another film’s continuity. AP reported the filmmakers’ assurance about preserving Logan.

The most defensible verdict
Deadpool & Wolverine is a multiverse story that opens a door to a broader mutant future, while keeping its own focus on the friendship between its two leads. That combination makes “the beginning of the end” a plausible metaphor for a shift in emphasis: less multiverse spectacle for its own sake, more room for mutant characters and character-led stories. But the film and the cited public comments do not establish that Marvel’s multiverse is ending.
