An industry production directory updated October 4, 2026, lists Squid Game: America as “In Post-Production” and says filming is complete. But August reports said Netflix had shelved the project. Netflix has not publicly resolved the conflict in the sources available.
What is the latest update on the American Squid Game spin-off?
The newest status entry comes from the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s Production List. Updated October 4, 2026, it labels the project “In Post-Production,” says principal photography has finished, and lists Los Angeles as the planned filming location. Those are claims in an industry directory, not an official Netflix announcement. Production List entry
That listing conflicts with August coverage. On August 6, What’s on Netflix, citing The Playlist’s Rodrigo Perez, reported that the project—then described as having the working title Heckler—was no longer moving forward at Netflix. GamesRadar+ reported the following day that the English-language project would not proceed, also citing The Playlist. The second story repeats the same underlying report; it is not separate official confirmation. What’s on Netflix · GamesRadar+
So the careful answer to “Is it still happening?” is: the directory’s latest entry says it reached post-production, while August reports said it had been shelved. Neither claim is an official Netflix status announcement.

What does the directory say about the project?
Production List describes the project as a US version set in the world of the Korean series. Its entry names Dennis Kelly as writer; Kim Ji-yeon, Hwang Dong-hyuk and David Fincher among the producers; and Cate Blanchett in the cast. These are directory-listed attachments, not a confirmed final Netflix cast or credits list. The entry calls it Squid Game: America; August coverage used Heckler as the reported working title. The reported filming locations do not match
Production List gives Los Angeles as the planned location. August coverage said the series was expected to shoot in the United Kingdom. Given the conflicting accounts—and the absence of an official Netflix confirmation—neither location should be treated as a confirmed filming site. Production List entry · What’s on Netflix

Blanchett’s finale appearance is not proof of a spin-off setup
What’s on Netflix’s August report said Blanchett’s brief appearance as a recruiter in the Squid Game finale was not developed as a direct setup for the Fincher project. That account is secondary reporting, not an official explanation from Netflix or the creative team. What’s on Netflix
Does the end of the original series settle the spin-off question?
No. Netflix describes season 3 as the third and final season of the original Squid Game, and Tudum identifies episode 6 as the planned series finale. That closes the original series’ story; it does not confirm or rule out a separate spin-off. Netflix Tudum: Season 3 · Netflix Tudum: Ending explained

Netflix also announced that Fincher’s The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will have a two-week IMAX run beginning November 25, 2026, before its Netflix debut on December 23, 2026. August reporting connected his work on that film to the reported change in the Squid Game project’s plans, but the release schedule itself does not establish why the spin-off’s status changed. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What would confirm the project’s status?
A clear Netflix announcement would resolve the disagreement between the directory entry and the August reports. Until then, the distinction matters: a production listing is evidence of what the directory reports, and repeated coverage of The Playlist’s account is evidence of what those outlets reported—not confirmation from Netflix that the series is in production or cancelled.
