Is Conclave accurate?
Broadly, in its visual world and several recognizable procedures; not in every event that drives its plot. PolitiFact judged the film mostly accurate in its broad depiction of the process while finding its secret-cardinal storyline implausible. An Associated Press review similarly praised the recreation of the setting and ritual but noted significant dramatic liberties. Those are expert assessments, not official Vatican endorsements.
The story is fictional. Pope Francis died on April 21, 2025, and the conclave to elect his successor began May 7. The real election provides a contemporary point of comparison, but it did not reenact the film’s events or confirm its plot. PolitiFact’s article appeared before the conclave and reported planned participation figures at that time: 133 electors from 71 countries, based on Holy See Press Office figures. Those are not a general statistic or a final attendance count.
How does the movie compare to a real papal conclave?
The setting and seclusion
The Sistine Chapel is not merely a cinematic choice: the Holy See’s governing constitution, Universi Dominici Gregis, prescribes it as the place of election. The rules also provide for the electors’ lodging at Domus Sanctae Marthae and restrict access to the areas used for the election. The film’s enclosed, controlled environment therefore has a real procedural basis.

Ballots and voting ritual
The election is conducted by secret ballot, and the ballot ceremony in the film is substantially recognizable. One important detail: ballots are burned after a voting session, typically after two rounds—not after each individual vote. The film’s ritual is a dramatic rendering of a real process, not a substitute for the full rules governing each stage.
Duration
A three-day conclave is plausible, but it is not a required length or a forecast. Associated Press quoted Villanova historical theology professor Massimo Faggioli: “The history of the conclaves in the last century is really a story of short conclaves.” That is context for why a short fictional conclave feels credible, not a guarantee about any future election.

Politics and private maneuvering
Cardinals discuss candidates and differences before and during the election process, so the existence of political judgment and disagreement is not itself far-fetched. But the film’s sharply drawn ideological camps, exposed scandals, and explicit vote-buying make for thriller drama. AP’s experts cautioned that the maneuvering is exaggerated and that sorting cardinals into secular liberal and conservative categories flattens their varied positions. The rules and expert commentary support that distinction; they do not establish that every private conversation or incident shown could never happen.
Could a cardinal appointed in secret vote?
The film’s late twist turns on a cardinal appointed in pectore—a designation used when the pope keeps an appointment’s identity undisclosed. According to PolitiFact’s explanation, while the identity remains undisclosed, the appointee lacks the rights of a cardinal. A document discovered after the pope’s death would not plausibly serve as a newly available credential to vote in the conclave.

AP’s quoted experts likewise identified the character’s admission to the conclave as a major error. This is one of the clearest points where the movie’s plot departs from the process: the dramatic reveal is not a realistic loophole in the voting rules.
Can cardinals talk to people outside during a conclave?
Not as a normal part of the process. Electors are secluded and face strict limits on outside communication. Universi Dominici Gregis allows communication only in proven, urgent circumstances and through the prescribed approval process. The film’s scenes in which Cardinal Lawrence receives outside reports about people and events should therefore be read as a thriller device, not as routine conclave practice.

How many votes happen before the ballots are burned?
Typically, two rounds of voting take place before the ballots from that session are burned. The ballots are secret, and the fire provides the visible signal associated with the outcome. Saying they are burned after every single ballot would misstate the usual procedure. The constitution is the primary source for the rules; PolitiFact corrected its account to specify the two-round sequence.
What the film is useful for—and what it is not
As an introduction to the look, atmosphere, and broad outline of a conclave, Conclave is persuasive. As an account of the 2025 election, the legal status of a secret appointee, or every detail of canon law, it is not. DePaul Catholic studies professor William Cavanaugh told AP, “The film gets a lot right,” referring to its visual recreation and pre-conclave conversations. That qualified praise captures the distinction: convincing texture and recognizable ritual coexist with a fictional, heightened plot.

The film is based on Robert Harris’s novel. Readers interested in the story’s literary source can approach the book as fiction, not as an authoritative guide to an actual papal election.
