Black Midi’s status became disputed in August 2024 after singer Geordie Greep wrote during an Instagram Live that the band was “indefinitely over.” Cameron Picton said he had been blindsided, while a band representative described the group as on hiatus for solo work. Greep later said the band was over, but the 2024 reports do not establish its present status.
What did Geordie Greep say?
Over the weekend of August 10, 2024, fans asked Greep during an Instagram Live when Black Midi would release new music. He wrote: “Black midi was an interesting band that’s indefinitely over.” Pitchfork reported the exchange on August 12, 2024. This was Greep’s statement during the live session, not an uncontested formal announcement from the band. Pitchfork’s report reproduced his wording.
Why did the band’s status seem unclear?
Cameron Picton said he was blindsided
In a since-deleted post on X, bassist Cameron Picton said the members had agreed not to announce a breakup and that Greep’s post surprised him. Pitchfork reproduced Picton’s words: “We’d agreed not to say anything about ‘breaking up’ so I was as blindsided as everyone else last night but maybe in a different way.” His post reflected his reaction; it was not a joint band statement.
Management called it a hiatus
A Black Midi representative told Pitchfork: “Black Midi are on a hiatus for now while they are working on solo projects.” The FADER subsequently reported management’s fuller description to The Quietus: the members had “agreed to have a break and do some solo work, with the understanding the black midi door be left open.” Those descriptions left open the possibility of the group continuing, unlike Greep’s more definitive wording. Pitchfork and The FADER reported the differing accounts.

What did Greep say later?
September: he said the band was over
In a later interview relayed by Louder on September 4, 2024, Greep said communication had broken down and explained that he did not want to leave fans expecting more music. “It’s over – I don’t want to string anyone along…. Nothing’s meant to go on forever and ever.” Louder’s account attributed the comments to an NME interview.
October: he reconsidered how he announced it
In an October 7, 2024 Guardian interview, Greep said he thought making the announcement that way was “the wrong thing to do, probably.” He also described his preference for plain speaking over the polished language he associated with band communications: “Almost every band, every personality, kind of behaves like a corporation – it’s like, everything is a press release.” The Guardian interview adds this retrospective qualification to his earlier remarks.

- On Monday May 9th we kick off our next black midi campaign for the band's sophomore album Hellfire, with the single & Gustaf Holten√§s ("Slow") directed video "Welcome To Hell". Hellfire will be out on July 15th. The album was written in London 2021 and produced by Marta Salogni and black midi, with additional production from Max Goulding. Artwork was created by David Rudnick (who's done the artwork for all previous black midi albums as well), using AI technology into which he fed lyrics from the album to generate imagery which was then printed, cut up and reconfigured into a detailed and complex collage. No band can quite build their own universe like¬black¬midi. Hellfire, their third ...

What was Black Midi known for?
Black Midi formed in London in 2017. Its original lineup, as named in Pitchfork’s coverage, included Greep, Picton, Morgan Simpson and Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin. The FADER describes the band’s early association with the Windmill in Brixton, its signing to Rough Trade, and three studio albums released through the label.
The albums in that run were Schlagenheim (2019), Cavalcade (2021) and Hellfire (2022). Pitchfork characterizes the group’s music through experimental rock, noise-rock, art-rock and post-hardcore; The FADER also points to progressive rock, jazz and classical music. These are critical descriptions of a deliberately wide-ranging sound, not a single genre label.

How did solo projects factor into the break?
Solo work was part of management’s explanation in August 2024. Picton said he was starting sessions for his own record, while Greep’s solo album The New Sound was reported as due October 4, 2024, via Rough Trade. Those details describe the plans reported at the time; they do not establish what each member is doing now. Pitchfork and Louder covered the solo-work context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Black Midi currently over?
The clearest answer is that Greep said the band was over, while Picton’s response and management’s contemporaneous language pointed to a break or hiatus with the door left open. Greep later reaffirmed that it was over, then acknowledged that his announcement may have been the wrong way to communicate it. The cited coverage documents those statements in 2024; it does not establish Black Midi’s status in October 2026.
